Dover Greeters The scheme aimed to provide a welcoming 1st point of contact for visitors to provide local informatio

The Dover Greeters scheme was first piloted by Dover Town Council in the spring of 2012. The scheme aimed to provide a welcoming first point of contact for visitors to the town of Dover to provide local information and promote special places and activities in Dover. The pilot was extremely successful and was re-launched again in April of this year the Dover Greeters scheme has gone from strength t

o strength with further volunteers and services offered. We were pleased to get volunteers Denise Smith and Liz Dimech involved as they had previous experience through the very successful Kent Greeters scheme. Dover has a huge footfall of visitors each year and our Greeters are keen to show them that there’s more to Dover than just our lovely white cliffs and castle. The cruise terminal in particular has increased the number of tourists visiting Dover and the Town council were keen to see that they are offered a friendly welcome and advice on what else to see and do around the town. The Dover Greeters assist visitors from all around the world offering a warm and friendly welcome to our town centre. Asked what he is most frequently requested by tourists, Dover Greeter Fred, told us: “I’m often asked for the nearest shop selling Clarkes shoes, fortunately we still have a small independent shoe shop in Pencester Road selling them I’m also often asked about the architecture too and people often stop to ask directions to the tourist information centre of course ”. The Dover Greeters are a group of passionate volunteers who love their town and want to share that passion with others. With expert knowledge of the local area and bags of enthusiasm they are able to point visitors and tourists toward local shops, cafes and services as well as promoting some of Dover’s lesser known hidden gems. The Dover Greeters are easily recognised by their blue uniforms. Equipped with t-shirts, fleeces, sun caps and raincoats they are prepared for any weather. They carry maps, useful contact numbers and Shop Watch Radio is happy to point people in the direction of useful information. http://www.dovertowncouncil.gov.uk/article/dover_greeters.aspx
