We’ve loved opening up our wildflower Croft to our guests. Mown paths take you down the little valley to a great view of the loch. Relax in the hammock by the burn or scramble down the little waterfall to the shoreline and return to your hut via the ruin of the old Croft barn.

Red deer stags on your doorstep!
Autumn is the season of the red deer up here in the north-west Highlands of Scotland. The impressive stags spend most of their time seeking out the hinds (females) and fending off rival males, their roaring calls echoing across the landscape.
West Coast Hideaways is a hot-spot to experience this and there is a good chance to see and hear red deer all around you as you soak in on one of our wood-fired hot-tubs!

New for 2024 we've opened up our 6-acre croft to our guests. Paths lead you around the flower-rich meadows, passed the old stone barn ruin and down to a secluded hammock next to the burn with views out over the loch - perhaps you'll see seals hauled out onto the rocks at low tide! We can offer you a true nature-break on our site - the ideal way to retreat from the pressures of everyday life. The photos below were all taken on the croft this spring.

A perfect day out for your stay at West Coast Hideaways: head down the coast road to Lochinver, stopping at one of the fine beaches on the way - Clashnessie, Stoer, Clachtoll or Achmelvich. Grab a pie at the famous Lochinver Larder . Then take the beautiful twisty single-track coast road down to Polbain and Achiltibuie. Stop at Achnahaird bay for breathtaking mountain views across the wide sandy beach. Finish off with a bit of high-class cuisine at the Summer Isles Hotel https://www.instagram.com/summer_isles_hotel?igsh=MXc2OGt6aGFxamw0Yg== in Achiltibuie..

Add a boat trip to your stay with us at West Coast Hideaways. Summer offers the chance to see our dramatic coastline from the sea with boat trips operating out of Ullapool, Lochinver and Kylesku. We made the most of the heatwave yesterday and headed out from Lochinver on a 'sunset tour with North Coast Sea Tours. Loads of seals and seabirds on this 1.5 hour trip up the coast as far as the famous 'split-rock' at Clachtoll

For nature lovers visiting the Scottish Northwest a trip to Handa Island is a real treat.
https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/reserve/handa-island/
A short hop from the mainland on a tiny foot-ferry lands you on a perfect white sand beach where the local rangers give you a talk before you head off on the pathway leading to towering red sandstone cliffs packed with seabirds. Fulmars, razorbills, guillemots and puffins are viewable close-up, while skuas and eagles are always on the lookout for easy pickings.
Combined with visits to our local beaches, mountains and lochs, Handa is another reason to base your stay with us.
The photos were all taken by us at Handa this year and last.

The grass is growing and we now have an Icelandic ewe with twin lambs on the croft, courtesy of in nearby Drumbeg.
Part of our plan to restore nature on the croft is to mimic a natural level of grazing. This boosts wildflowers, insects and other wildlife. Guests are welcome to walk on the croft and down to our shoreline where you can watch seals hauled out on the rocks at low tide.

Scotland has plenty of mountains but very few like these! Our mountains in Assynt look more like volcanos rising above the moorlands. It gives the area an ‘other-worldly’ feel. Combine that with a beautiful rugged coastline with lochs and beaches and you have something extra special. Come and discover it for yourself with a stay in our luxury shepherds huts.

There’s a chance of seeing the UK’s biggest bird of prey; the white-tailed eagle from our shepherds huts overlooking Loch Nedd. They went extinct in the UK early last century but have been reintroduced, are protected, and are slowly spreading in Scotland.
We photographed this one overhead earlier this week. That wingspan is about 2 meters!

Combine a stay with us with experiencing the wildlife of the far north-west of Scotland. Seals and water birds on the coast and lochs, eagles and ptarmigans in the mountains. Or just watch the wildlife from the comfort of your shepherds hut overlooking Loch Nedd and the north coast. There’s never a bad time to come with each time of year offering something different.

We’re in the Assynt-Coigach National Scenic Area, and the UNESCO North West Highlands Geopark. That means you won’t be disappointed by the scenery! Fewer tourists in the winter make it a perfect place to come and de-stress for a few days. Lie back and enjoy the view of the Loch from our cosy shepherds huts, or blow away the cobwebs with a quick hike up the well marked trail on Quinag mountain. The photo was taken yesterday looking east from Quinag towards Loch Assynt..

At West Coast Hideaways the shepherds huts overlook our 6 acre croft which runs down to the shore of Loch Nedd. From 2024 we’re planning to make pathways and open the croft for our visitors to enjoy. We are both passionate about nature so we’ll be planting more native trees and enhancing the wildflower areas to increase biodiversity. We also have a small but precious example of Atlantic rain forest on the shoreline. Come and experience northwest Highlands nature with us next year!
