Day 53 of 108. Alfred changes our plans!

Monday 3rd March we should have been in Brisbane, however the port has been shut due to Cyclone Alfred.

We’ve been watching Alfred for some days via the Australian Bureau of Meteorology website. Captain Inger had previously told us we would arrive into Brisbane early to help with the conditions but a change to Alfreds track has now closed the port.

Thanks to some good replanning we are now able to arrive into our next 2 ports a day earlier than originally scheduled and we now have a bonus overnight in Darwin.

We put some speed on late afternoon and overnight to pass the edge of Alfred as quickly as possible and this morning it’s a lovely day and back to great cruising.

We’ve a full day of onboard activities to enjoy and of course most importantly Queen Anne and all crew and guests are safe. Next stop Airlie Beach!

Day 47 of 108. Port 12 - Bay of Islands.
Another day of gorgeous weather for our time in the Bay of Islands. What is there to do?
🔹 Visit Waitangi - birthplace of the nation
🔹 Take the ferry to Russell
🔹 Cruise the islands
🔹See the hole in the rock
🔹Flight seeing
And so much more

For Breakwater Travel we went into the small town of Paihia. The walk was about 1.3 miles in but a handy shuttle took us back to the tender quay. We have stayed in Russell previously so this was a chilled day for us with lunch overlooking the water and included some life admin - no escaping it when away this long.

We have absolutely loved our 4 days being back in New Zealand. This is our 4th trip to New Zealand and whilst our shortest trip here, and first by cruise ship, we’ve been reminded how wonderful the country is. There is just so much to see and do, how friendly everyone is, beautiful countryside and it’s all so relaxed. We 100% recommend a trip to the land of the long white cloud!

Day 46 of 108. Port 11 - Tauranga, New Zealand. 😎 Actually it’s Mount Maunganui! 😎

The port of Tauranga is at Mount Maunganui and it was a wonderful day. Now you could go off to Hobbiton, thermal sites including Rotorua or you can simply walk off the ship to enjoy a lovely relaxed beach town.

We made our way to Mauao, colloquially known in New Zealand simply as The Mount, the large extinct volcano and enjoyed the almost 3km perimeter base walk. We passed beaches, sea birds and admired the fantastic views.

The weather was divine and a local lunch followed and a stroll of the streets, admired the gorgeous beachfront houses and the proper shops.

Mount Maunganui is in the Bay of Plenty and we highly recommend it for a day or 2 if exploring North Island

Day 45 of 108. Port 10 - Day 2 in Auckland, New Zealand. 😎 Enjoyjng the sunshine 😎

Day 2 started cloudy but became a lovely summers day - how weird is that to say in February!

There was shopping in Queen Street and a trip to the Sky Tower. The glass lift door and panel in the lift floor were an unwelcome surprise on the way up! There were some lovely views over the city and islands.

Lunch at Dr Rudy’s Brewing Co involved pulled brisket on pizza and more great views. We then explored the Wynqard Quarter before getting back on board.

We sail overnight and arrive in Tauranga tomorrow morning.

Day 44 of 108. Port 10 - Auckland, New Zealand.
The day we went to Hobbiton!

The city of sails greeted our arrival with a proper maritime tradition for a ships maiden call with water jets from other boats.

Our quay is right in town and next to the ferries so perfect for easy access for Auckland sightseeing. We also have a 2 day call so plenty of time to explore.

We’ve had 3 wonderful holidays in New Zealand previously so for our 1st day we went to
Hobbiton which was brilliant. The good people who run it though aren’t keen on photos being used commercially so no photos here but if you search for Jo Geekie I have done a public post on my personal page.

With an overnight stay it gave chance to go out for dinner and see a little of the city on a balmy summers night.

Day 43 of 108. At sea - en route to Auckland, New Zealand.🍽️Let’s talk food 🍽️

🍴We have a plethora of restaurant venues onboard. We need to dispel a Cunard misconception. Guests are allocated a main restaurant based on whether they have booked a Britannia, Britannia Club or a Grills stateroom. We are Britannia and it has waiter service at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s included within your fare and you can literally eat 3 courses at every meal!

🍴Breakfast and lunch are open seating, for dinner you can choose an early or late sitting (we’re late at 8.15) or you can also opt for any time dining. You don’t have to eat at your allocated restaurant though.

🍴if you don’t want a full on waiter experience you can eat more casually in several included venues or for a little extra and something different you can dine in a speciality restaurant.

🍴We’ll share more on other venues over the next few weeks but for now we thought we would share tonight’s dinner menu and some food snaps at the Britannia restaurant, except we just gobbled our dinner and mostly forgot the photos!

Comment to guess what we had!

✨Inaugural Stargazing at sea on Queen Anne✨

We had the wonderful opportunity to go stargazing at sea in the South Pacific.

Our guest lecturer Charles Barclay, renowned astronomer and fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, hosted some night sky viewing as Captain Inger kindly agreed to turn off some of the ship and deck lights.

You would expect being at sea would be great for astronomy but it’s often too humid and too cloudy. We were fortunate to have some good conditions and saw the Southern Cross, stars of the southern hemisphere plus great views of Orion’s Belt, Jupiter and Mars.

It was a great experience, even if a bit windy, and we were fortunate the weather gods aligned.

Obviously we didn’t want to create light pollution on deck by taking photos with our phone so here’s a beautiful photo by someone far more experienced to get your attention.

Day 40 of 108. At sea en route to Tonga
🗺️Reflecting on how far we’ve travelled so far🗺️

✨It is amazing to think how far we have travelled since leaving Southampton. We’ve crossed the Atlantic, been through the Panama Canal and now we are in the Pacific Ocean.

✨We have been to ports and still have ports to come that are truly exotic, places that seem to be remote names on a map from school days and far away lands that you never imagined that 1 day you could actually get to.

✨As we sail across the Pacific we realise just how vast it is. The collage below is on our deck walk today and there is just water. We could have done this collage from any of the days between San Francisco to Hawaii, from Hawaii to Samoa or after Tonga on our way to New Zealand.

✨We know we are fortunate to do this whole 🌎voyage and a lot of hard work, savings and dedication made it happen. We are having the best time and if you want to do something iconic we 100% recommend it.

✨If you can’t spare the 100 plus days then lots of shorter segments are available. A number of cruisers joined in San Francisco and get off in Auckland and Sydney. Others join in San Francisco and Sydney and get off in Singapore and Cape Town. Get in touch if you want to look at doing something similar for 2026 or even 2027.

✨Tomorrow is the Kingdom of Tonga and another Polynesian island we can’t wait to explore.

Day 39 of 108. Port 8 - Samoa!
South Pacific Jewel

Our 1 day in Samoa was all too brief. Such lovely friendly people with children who all say hello and wave. Colourful and traditional clothing worn by so many.

In the morning our tour took us to Robert Louise Stevenson’s house which after a good look round we had traditional dancing , kava ceremony and some delicious taro snacks.

Back in town we saw the cathedral, parliament and a historical tomb as well as shopping at the market.

Our ship was moored just on rhe edge of town so in the afternoon we walked back into Apia for a wander on our own. Samoa post are so friendly and I even managed to add something to my own private collection.

If you should ever stop in Samoa we found most tourist establishments happily took US dollars

Day 38 of 108. Final sea day before Samoa.
It’s not all relaxation …

You might think we’re just sipping cocktails, lazing by the pool, going to shows, exploring exotic ports and meeting new people and mostly you’re not wrong!

Today though the Breakwater Travel laptop has been open again for a few hours as we still support existing clients and some new enquiries. Technology is amazing and we’ve been able to verify payments, check documents for an upcoming departure and work on a vey exciting and exotic honeymoon.

Tonight though it’s time to join Captain Inger and her officers for another world cruise cocktail party🍹. It would be rude to decline!
