First Dolphins seen for a week or so today. It’s not unusual for them to disappear for a week or so then come back. This particular individual just happens to be ‘Haar’ part of the Dolphin sculpture in Broughty Ferry(bottom front left in picture). Named of course by public competition they were modeled from actual resident dolphins from The Tay. They’ve changed even since the sculpture with a new nick out of the Dorsal and a wee lesion which has healed to a small white mark. Haar was seen off the coast of Northumberland(Berwick upon Tweed) on 29/08/24(thanks to North East Cetacean Project for this info 🥰). Litterally had more holidays than me 😩😂

‘Papped’ by brilliant local photographer Martin Mann today. We’ve been absolutely hammered by the high winds for the last 2 weeks so was just brilliant to get back to getting folks out on the water today. We managed 5/6 trips before wind beat us again 😩
We’d like to thank all of the folks who’ve been so understanding over the last few weeks. So many of you have rebooked. The last thing we want to do is disappoint. Nothing higher on our priorities than safety though and we won’t budge from that.
We’re just a tiny micro business but we think we pack a punch for Broughty Ferry, Dundee and the wider area and bleeding every drop of marketing blood 🩸 that promotes all of us is at our core. This applies to all your brilliant local businesses. Use us, share our posts, promote us in your posts.

Super Yacht Tour Monday today. Popping into Tayport on the wee(£500k+) tender. £67million Elysian owned by Billionaire John Henry of Liverpool Fc owning Fame. A real feat of engineeringing and beauty. Can’t be easy watching how the little people are doing on the 6 O’clock news though 🙄
Pool, helipad, tender ‘garage’, art works, sauna, you name it. Running costs reported to be $9million a year. Hope he got the crew some Chippies on the way back 😄

Welcome back Haar 👋
Exciting spot yesterday 😄
This beautiful sculpture of dolphins by the artist F***y Christie is of actual dolphins that frequent the Tay. We asked our friends at The Sea Mammal Research Unit(who led the naming competition and provided the ID’s) last night about a photo we’d taken yesterday. Turns out it was Haar, Dolphins ID No 1272 which is one the 3 that were modelled by the artist. Not only that they were quite excited to see the evolution of the dorsal. This dolphin has been in some scrapes! We can see in the photos a small nick near the top and a lesion that has healed along with new scrapes and a bigger nick below.
We’ll be looking out for Haar today on our trips 👀

Not a brilliant pic from yesterday but a pretty unique one !
I learned a thing yesterday 🧠 The S-posture is something rarely sighted never mind photographed mid-air 😲
Here’s some really concise info from ‘The wild dolphin project’. Long one but really well explained.

‘Using visual signals, along with vocalizations, is one way whales and dolphins can communicate with one another. The S-posture is one such body signal, where the dolphin bends its body into an S shape. Generally, dolphins use this body posture in two specific social contexts: courtship and aggression

Males of a species fight with one another for many reasons, including over resources such as food, space and females or to establish societal dominance or rank. Nearly every summer since 1985, the WDP has observed aggression between male spotted dolphins, and also between male bottlenose and male spotted dolphins.

While the exact function of the posture is unknown, there are a couple possible explanations, based on scientific observations. It could serve as a ‘warning’ signal before more escalated and potentially damaging combative behavior, such as body ramming and tail-slaps. It could also be a way to appear larger and more intimidating, similar to wolves puffing up their fur or bears standing on their hind legs.

In addition to displaying a threat, Dolphins use the S-posture during courtship or mating. Denise Herzing has observed that a male will approach a female in an S-posture, and orient his rostrum to the female’s ge***al area while also buzzing that region with his echolocation. This ge***al buzz is a kind of foreplay from a distance, and it’s possible could even have a physical effect on the recipient female!’

This particular Dolphin was an aggressive acrobat throwing themselves out of the water with total abandon. Amazing how experience for those passengers yesterday.
Incredible stuff. All happening 2 mins from Broughty Ferry 🤗
Thanks to Jo at North East Cetacean Project for the pointers ☺️
