⛽ Jet Fuel Supply Challenges at OR Tambo International ✈️
Despite securing millions of litres of jet fuel, Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has warned that logistical hurdles and stock shortages could still disrupt fuel supply at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in the short term.
Key Issues:
🔥 A fire at the Natref refinery on January 4 halted production, impacting 72% of JNB’s fuel stock
🚛 Transport delays – Fuel is in South Africa but must be pumped from Durban to Johannesburg, a 7–10 day process
⏳ Fuel uplift restrictions remain in place until February 25, unless lifted earlier
💡 Current Stock & Incoming Supply:
📦 29.7 million litres available at JNB (as of January 28) – approximately 11.7 days of supply
🚢 Three fuel shipments arriving in Durban between February 5–10, adding 71.5 million litres
📈 Total of 150.6 million litres expected to be available for February
Airlines remain cautious, closely monitoring the situation. Acsa and fuel suppliers are working to mitigate risks, but potential disruptions remain a concern for airlines and operators in the region.
