Let’s talk about Velassaru 💕 a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World

My first trip to the Maldives 11 years ago I fell in love with this island , it’s a natural island with the prettiest beaches and crystal clear water.

They have a stunning range of villas from deluxe to beach and of course water! Each one is unique and equally beautiful.

There is a nice range of dining here with 4 restaurants- Vela , Turquoise, Sands & Teppanyaki plus Chill Bar where you can grab tapas and drinks perfect for a sunset!

The staff on the island have an amazing attention to detail from remembering your villa number to what your preferred drink is , everyone is so welcoming and warm!

The vibe is very much understated luxury , and I’m delighted to say that it is still as good as it was 11 years ago, a little piece of my heart stays here ❤️

Swimming with Turtles 🐢

Yesterday we took a snorkel on a reef about 20 mins from SO/ and were lucky to swim with 2 turtles!

They are super calm and not afraid at all, so graceful and beautiful to see out in their natural environment.

We then went onto another reef and swam there for about half an hour, beautiful fish and corals!

I’ve not snorkelled for years , I’m not the most confident swimmer in open water - I hear Jaws music in my head, but I was determined to try it again and once I was calm it was amazing!

The Maldives is incredible for marine life , you don’t need to dive to see the amazing fish! 🐠

SO/ Maldives 🌴🐚💕

We are spending our last few days at the brand new island SO/ Maldives.

Just 15 minutes from Male by speedboat , this island opened late 2023 and has a play of fashion and arts.

This island features water and beach villas , all with their own private pool, direct access to the sea and all the modern touches. Beautiful designs across the resort, including the most colourful pool in the Maldives.

Food is great, where you will find Asian, Western & Eastern influences.

They have a dedicated water sports centre offering jet ski, paddle boards, kayaks and more!

A dedicated childrens club , section of the pool for children and private cabanas are just some of the touches you will find here.

Bikes are available throughout the resort free of charge , they feature a beautiful spa and a fully equipped gym.

LUX Sunset Hour 🧡

We’ve had the most amazing 10 days at LUX , I cannot thank the staff enough for making us feel so special and looking after us.

We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Senses restaurant for our last dinner and cocktails in the bar!

Now onto our next part of this trip … keep following!!

Coral Reef Restoration 🪸

Here at LUX they have a marine biologist on the island who works on a number of projects and one of them is to help protect the corals and restore them.

Over time with how the worlds weather is changing with climate change the corals in the Maldives are at risk and they often encounter what’s called Coral Bleaching , which is when they turn white , sometimes they can recover and other times they don’t.

At LUX they have a house reef which you can snorkel on everyday , there is also some beautiful reefs out on the lagoon near to where the wave breaker is.

Around the main jetty they have made a reef as well. They build these cages and take established coral from other parts and then attach it to this frame securely. Over a period of 2 years they establish themselves into a new reef and can survive really well , this is critical work to ensure they protect the marine life as well. This frame will be totally covered after two years with flourishing corals.

This frame is no 254 planted since 2019 , they will leave it near the jetty for a few weeks and then it will be moved to the main LUX house reef.

Not all islands are committed to this , there is no regulation from the government to do so, everything is done at the islands choice. LUX are leading the way with their marine life and coral protection and have been recognised for this.

This is fantastic work by LUX .

I S L A N D L I F E 🪸🐚🌴

I could say it’s been a busy few days but it hasn’t really, the Maldives is one of the most relaxing places ever!

We’ve explored more of the island on walks, dined at some of the amazing restaurants they have to offer , made a wish at the Tree of Wishes and enjoyed amazing sunsets!

We have also encountered some rain sadly , the weather changes frequently and we had a full 24 hours of torrential rain , followed by a cloudy day yesterday. Today has started well with the sunshine back but there is rain predicted this afternoon.

With the way the climate is changing across the world there are never any guarantees despite being in high season, the locals are finding the changes are more frequent now.

You will not be bored , the trick to choosing the right island is having enough dining options and activities to enjoy!

S U N S E T S AT L U X 🌅

There is a whole range of experiences you can join at LUX some complimentary and some payable, these can all be pre booked before your arrival by myself to ensure you don’t miss out !

Last night we took a Dhoni Boat which is a Maldivian boat out to sea to watch the amazing sunset, we treated to a pretty special one, the skies changed dramatically! LUX own these boats and so you are looked after by the team here. The cost for this is 35$ per person.

We then dined at East Restaurant which is an Asian inspired menu - amazing food! We were luck to be able to enjoy the over water pod which is super romantic , and if you’re lucky you will have fish and sharks swimming around!
