Hucks Starter in Action
As aeroplane engines & propellers became larger, the process of a ‘Hand Swing’ to start the engine needed a re think.
Invented by Captain Bentfield Hucks of the Royal Flying Corps it gave a mechanical start to the engine without the need to hand swing. It entered service in late 1918 and was used in the 1920’s & 1930’s.
Despite thousands being built they are now quite scarce with our own version being based on a Model-T Ford and a live example used regularly at the Shuttleworth Collection.
