Fancy getting lost in Norway?

Norway is one of those destinations that we know very little about. It goes under the tourism radar unless you are talking about the Northern Lights. So, I wanted to highlight two areas you may not have heard of that are situated close to Sognefjord (The nations longest & deepest fjord).

If you love exploring the outdoor summer lifestyles of either Switzerland, or Austria, or you want to go-large on the Lake District, then Norway could be your next destination.

Bestebakken
Located in the cute village of Hafslo you can find Bestebakken! This place is a perfect mix of comfort and luxury surrounded by stunning nature. This charming hotel has historical rooms , cozy common areas, and amazing views of the mountains and lakes.

You can even sleep in glass houses surrounded by cute alpacas!

Bestebakken Hotel is great for both relaxation and adventure. In the summer, you can hike, bike, and explore the scenic area surrounding Hafslo. The nearby Sognefjord is perfect for kayaking, boating, and just taking in the scenic views

Lindis is your host at this property and she is famed for her cooking. She has had clients compare her food to Michelin star restaurants! She is also an amazing guide, who knows the area very well. If there is anything you need, Lindis will always do her very best to help!

Slinde Vineyard
A must-visit in the same area! This boutique vineyard offers tours and tastings, so you can enjoy local wines while taking in the gorgeous vineyard views

It is the Northern most vineyard in the world and it is owned by a lovely couple, Bjørn and Halldis!

Whether you're after outdoor adventures or a peaceful escape in nature, Bestebakken Hotel and Slinde Vineyard offer a unique experience in one of Norway’s most beautiful regions

The Sognefjord is perfect to combine with either Oslo or Bergen, and is the perfect place to escape after exploring the city!

For more information on this or anywhere else in Norway or the rest of Scandinavia, give me a call on 01323 660 109 or email me at david.cook @ travelcounsellors .com

So, as many of you know, I am currently exploring the island of Crete and my mission is to discover those hidden gems, so that I can recommend them to any of my customers visiting in the future.

Last night, I went to a mountain village restaurant for dinner where everything on the menu is homemade, the wine is from Crete and the atmosphere is authentically local.

Of course, I ordered way too much food (eyes bigger than my belly), but every dish was definitely made with love, passion and that home cooked taste that you just don't get from a high street chain.

The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, the Yaya's (Grandma's) were sat outside their homes chatting and laughing and the obligatory cat was meandering between table legs trying to get scraps from the diners.

For me, travel is all about authentic experiences and this restaurant hit the nail on the head.

This weeks' "Guess the destination!" is an island.

This island covers an area of 8,260km2. It is 260km long and 52km wide at its widest part.

Did you know?

This island has evidence that it was home to one of the earliest settlers dating back to the 7th century BC. Jennifer Aniston's dad was born here. This island is home to one of the world's oldest Olive Trees. This island has upto 5 metres of snow each year. The original inhabitants of this island were wiped out by Tsunami.

Have you always dreamed of visiting Greece?

Introducing: The Classic Greek Island Hop
Mykonos (3 nights) - Naxos (4 nights) - Paros (3 nights) - Santorini (4 nights)

If you've never visited the Greek Islands before, then this itinerary will be a great place to start. Each island has its own unique personality, so you'll experience four islands on a two-week holiday, without it feeling like you are rushing. Of course, this is ideal if you like to explore, rather than just lay on a beach although there is still plenty of time for that too.

Mykonos and Santorini are two of the most visited islands in Greece and definitely worth seeing as they are both very photogenic, but Naxos and Paros are less popular and although not what I would call "off the beaten track", they both have a different charm and a pace of life all of their own. Naxos is the largest of the four islands and car hire for a couple of days is definitely worth making the effort.

I have visited all four islands personally and some of them multiple times, so whether you are travelling alone, with friends, or with the family, then give me a call and I can put the perfect itinerary together for you.

This weeks' "Guess the destination!" is a country.

This country is Tetraphobic (avoiding the number 4) as it is considered unlucky. In a lift you will often see floors 1, 2, 3, and F.

Did you know?
This nation is considered one of the heaviest drinkers in the world. You are also unlikely to see anyone jaywalking as the people here respect the traffic and pedestrian laws. This country has some unusual museums, one of which is dedicated to all things p**p related. This country is also home to worlds longest metro spanning 940km in combined length.

Today is Earth Day!

This year’s theme is reducing plastic usage both at home and whilst you travel.

At home, I try and find ways of replacing my own plastic items with non-plastic alternatives. So far, I have removed hand wash soap dispensers, body wash and shampoo bottles from the bathroom. I use soap instead for all three.

I have replaced my original washing machine liquid with tabs that come in a cardboard box. My washing up scouring pads are now biodegradable and made with coconut husk. I buy single item fruit and veg that doesn't come in a pointless plastic bag and I have long life bags for my weekly shop.

I haven't done all of the above from day 1 but phased them out as I use up the plastic alternatives. The fun part for me is trying to research alternative options and some have been more of a challenging than others.

At work, did you know that when you book a holiday with me, you can request to stay in a property that is signed up to our Green Leaf Scheme that helps reduce waste, actively employs local staff, reduces plastic waste, sources local food where possible, and much more. Ask me for further details.

We all have to start somewhere so on Earth Day, why not commit to reducing your plastic usage!

Guess the Destination is back! (after a bit of a holiday)

This weeks' "Guess the destination!" is a country.

In Summer time, although this country has plenty of beach resorts and the average daily temperature is around 25 degrees, you can usually still find snow on the mountains.

Did you know?

The locals refer to their country's name as Crna Gora meaning Black Mountain. This country is home to Europe's deepest river canyon at 1,300 metres. Brad Pitt's first movie was filmed here. This country is home to 270 bird species and is also the second largest producer of strawberries.

This weeks "Guess the destination!" is a country.

This country has burning mountainsides that have been on fire for over 4,000 years. This is caused by gas from underground seeping up through the earth to the surface.

Did you know?
The capital city is situated 28 metres below sea level which means it is the lowest lying capital in the world. The national dish is pancakes (stuffed and savoury) and are filled with meat, veggies, herbs and spices. The country has nearly 400 mud volcanoes, bubbling away in a gooey mess. The country also has a museum dedicated to miniature books, the smallest is 2mm x 2mm and most you can only ready with a magnifying glass.

Welcome to part 2 of my "Travel Inspirations" for January.

It has to be said, the Maldives is of the most picture perfect settings in the world, so don't you owe it to yourself to visit at least once?

Whether you like to sunbathe all day, snorkel, cycle, deep sea fishing, love fine dining or casual dining, the Maldives has the answer (except maybe for those on a small budget).

Each property is unique, and there will be at least one that will be exactly what you are looking for, regardless of whether you prefer an adult only or family friendly hotel.

If you need some advice choosing the right island or want to combine the Maldives with another destination such as Sri Lanka, then get in touch on 01323 660 109.

Welcome to part 1 of my "Travel Inspirations" for January.

Always fancied going on a Safari?

Well, I can highly recommend visiting Tanzania. From the majestic snow topped Mount Kilimanjaro to the plains of the Serengeti and the enclosed rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, this country is by far one of the best places to experience a safari and see the big 5, plus a few others.

Plus, if after a safari you fancy some beach time, then just a short hop away are the stunning beaches of Zanzibar.

This weeks "Guess the destination!" is a country.

The capital of this country was the only major city in Europe not bombed during World War II.

Did you know?
This country has the highest density of castles in the world. This country is ranked as the 7th safest country in Europe. There are more than 250,000 words in the country's language (that's more than French, Arabic and Russian). In 2016, this country changed its name (and this is the answer I am looking for).

This weeks "Guess the destination!" is a country.

It is said that Chocolate is originally from this country and it has been used in local culture from around the 6th century.

Did you know?
When North American school buses reach 10 years old or 150,000 miles on the clock, some are auctioned off and driven to this country, revived, painted and used as
local public transport. On 1st November, local people go to the cemetery to clean the graves of their deceased love ones and then fly intricately decorated
kites to honour the dead, so the sky is full of kites. The meaning of this countries name is the "land of many trees". There are 30 volcanoes in this country and so it
is possible to see red hot lava flow up close and personal.

21/12/2023

Did you know?

1. The magic moment
While many people see the winter solstice as a whole day in the calendar, it actually refers to a specific moment in time. The solstice marks the point at which the Sun is exactly overhead of the Tropic of Capricorn, which this year is, 22 December at 03:27 GMT.

2. Winter begins
As well as marking the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice marks the first day of winter in the astronomical calendar, whilst in the regular calendar, winter starts at the beginning of December.

3. Nine hours darker
The day of the winter solstice marks the shortest day at 7 hours and 50 minutes. The summer solstice in June is just short of 16 hours and 38 minutes. This means that the winter solstice is nine hours shorter than the longest day.

4. The earliest sunset
You would expect the earliest sunset to fall on the shortest day, but the earliest sunset actually occurs a few days earlier in the calendar. This is because our clocks do not quite mirror the Earth's orbit.

5. Solstice and Christmas
Amongst the many festivals that centre around the solstices, some rituals are more familiar than you think.

Perhaps more familiar to us is Yule, the 12-day festival centred around the solstice has given birth to many of our most familiar Christmas traditions including the Christmas tree, the Yule log and the Christmas wreath.

6. More recent traditions
As times have changed, a more recent tradition is to set aside some time, plan where you want to go on holiday in the following year and then email david.cook @ travelcounsellors .com and tell him what you would like to do. This has to be done before the end of December to maximise your chance of success.

This then in turn grants your wish and sets in motion a series of events culminating in you having a holiday to look forward to in your calendar.

This weeks "Guess the destination!" is an island/archipelago.

Made up of between 99 and 104 islands (depending on the tide) this is the ultimate tropical paradise.

Did you know?
The island has a cable car which is 1.4 miles long and one of the main tourist attractions. There is a sky bridge, which is 125 metre long and has a couple of glass floor panels. The islands emblem is a very large reddish-brown eagle. The best time to visit this island/archipelago is from November to March. Some of the best activities to enjoy are the night market, the cuisine, watersports, island hopping and of course sunbathing.

Christmas Market anyone?

It is still not too late to book that last minute visit to a Christmas Market in Europe. Remember, 12th night isn't until the 5th January so why not extend the festivities.

A Pagan tradition has it, that you are suppose to sip warm spiced cider from a Wassail bowl on 12th night, but I am sure a mulled wine or two works just as well.
