Through our TreadRight Foundation, we proudly partner with the Barena Association in Italy to preserve the Northern Venetian Lagoon, its wetlands, wildlife, and Indigenous culture and traditions 🌲💧
The habitats of the Northern Venetian Lagoon are disappearing fast, primarily due to human impact. The Barena Association’s main project, SOS Barena, aims to protect and restore the salt marshes, that are coastal wetlands that are flooded and drained by salt water and are important habitat for wildlife and in helping to maintain water quality.
Our grant, together with TreadRight’s, will fund the construction of a 150-meter barrier along the salt marshes’ edge. This barrier will be filled with mud to allow native vegetation to grow, creating a natural, long-term defense against erosion. This will help protect approximately 3.24 hectares of salt marsh and avoid CO2 emissions of 17.7 to 59.3 tonnes through habitat sequestration.
