On 16 April 1746, two worlds collided in Scotland at the Battle of Culloden: the rested and numerically superior troops of the English king faced an army of Jacobites, predominantly Scottish rebels who wanted to bring Prince Charles Stuart to the English throne. The rebels had previously won several victories through daring assaults by the Highlanders. This time, however, the Highlanders' assault was crushed by the iron discipline of the English Redcoats. The battle was decided in just half an hour, but it ended in carnage and the fleeing rebels were mercilessly pursued and executed. This was the beginning of a dark chapter for Scotland, as Scottish culture was now systematically suppressed and even the wearing of tartans (kilts) was banned for decades.

The magic of Glencoe - a jewel in the Scottish Highlands that may look familiar to you?

While Glencoe itself is not directly featured in a film scene, the stunning landscape is a constant companion in the Outlander title picture and opening credits, among others.

Near this stunning location is the Glenfinnan Monument, where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised the standard in August 1745 at the start of the Second Jacobite Revolt.

Golden autumn colours at Culross Palace 😍

Culross Palace was used for season 1, 2 and 4 in Outlander!

Season 1: Claire and Geillis meet in Castle Leoch’s gardens, which are actually the gardens of Culross Palace.

Season 2: The Jacobite meetings were filmed in the High Hall of Culross Palace.
The Jacobite camp, where Claire extracts a tooth, was set up in front of the palace.

Season 4: The rooms of Culross Palace were used for one of the rooms in Laoghaire’s home.

Who else gets emotional when Claire visits the stone and talks to Jamie? 😭

The memorial stone of Clan Fraser has to be part of our Culloden series, of course.
Thanks to Outlander this is now a famous site and there are almost always flowers next to the stone 🥹

According to legend the ghosts of the fallen soldiers still walk the grounds of the battlefield 😶

Part 2 of our Culloden topic…

Do you recognise this memorial?

It was erected to remember the battle and everyone who fought and died in battle.
In less than 1 hour approximately 1250 Jacobites got killed, while the English only lost around 50 men. This only emphasizes the tragedy of the entire event.
The Battle of Culloden was the last pitched battle in Britain.

Also… Did you know that there was a real James Fraser who fought at Culloden? 😱

Probably nothing that instantly makes you think of Outlander, but there’s a connection to the series, because this little house, called Leanach Cottage, can be found on the grounds of the Culloden battlefield.

There was a similar cottage during the battle of Culloden that was used as a field hospital for the wounded soldiers.
The building you can visit nowadays was built in the early 19th century and used as the battlefield’s first museum in the 1960s.

Stay tuned for more about Culloden and Outlander in our next post 🤩

Who wants to visit one of the most mysterious places in Outlander? Where Jamie’s ghost appeared and where Samhain took place?
Then this is the perfect spot for you!

In the series we know this town as Inverness, but in reality it is Falkland.

And now a question for real Outlander fans:
Through which window do we see Claire in that famous scene? 😁

Culross should be on every list when visiting Scotland. You could say Culross is small but mighty.
Only 2280 people live here, but this town is full of history and beautiful houses, many of them from the 17th and 18th century.
It feels like you’re travelling through time. The producers of Outlander must’ve felt like that too, because they chose Culross to portrait the town centre of Cranesmuir in the series.
