Lots of varied work over the last month for department.
Climbing, Bikeability, Bushcraft, Canoeing, ASN, and intervention programs. Participants all loving the weather... and with the storms, it made best sense to hide inside at the climbing centre or add a half day in the museum sometimes, too.

Here's to more settled weather... 🀞

Last month also had a fairly epic Silver assessment exped near estate. Cracking weather but chilly nights saw our lil troopers smashing out some impressive distance days while logging all the wildlife they could find. Great job for another two outdoor Ed teams.

Tough and testing day out paddling for an group the other week. Consistent blowy onshore winds meant there was no room for complacency or laziness. The teams all worked harder than they thought they could and had a splashing time!

Cracking Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition last month in the for with Gus.

Weather was 50:50 torrential sideways rain, galeforce winds or space vacuum still. But beautiful views in some wyld places. The team loved their first trip into the and, despite the challenges, performed perfectly. Trips like that can be make or break for a group, but these guys smashed it out the park. Well proud πŸ‘πŸ½

I recently returned with my Bradfield College team for Global Action from Zanzibar Island, just off the coast of mainland Tanzania.

2 weeks spent exploring, soaking up the culture, learning of the islands rich history and witnessing/assisting in some projects run by local groups and NGOs to further the coastal communities sustainability goals, increase women's empowerment & employment opportunities in the region along with learning of the ocean conservation efforts and studies on the surrounding coral reefs (which, btw, are absolutely beautiful).

Big emphasis on personal development for the team to enhance their knowledge of the world, make them strong global citizens and future leaders.

I couldn't have asked for a better team, and they smashed everything we set them while immersing themselves fully.

Well proud πŸ‘πŸ½ πŸ’ͺ🏽

Hardest thing is picking 10 photos to highlight the trip, expect more later!

Cracking crew of student travellers and staff as usual. DAA never disappoints for atmosphere, Go Falcons ( jk πŸ†)

Walking tours of Kathmandu, biking in the countryside, Rafting toward Pokhara, camping in the hills, climbing at and having a blast. Oh, and eating mo momos than you can count, delicious.

Massive thanks to for running such a smooth in-country operation as per usual and .treble for wrangling our 3 teams.

So, the last few weeks of work for Council Outdoor Ed have looked a lot like this.

So, Instagram has been glitchy of late, and I keep getting frustrated when trying to post photos from Norway. Apparently, updating won't fix it, so I can't put it off as work travel starts up now = more content. So here we go.

Spent New Years and my birthday in Norway with some great friends.
What a country!
Lots of ice cold dips, swims, saunas, snowy coffee walks, cool old wooden church buildings, coffee & cake.

Perfect.

Happy 2023 ya'll! πŸ₯³

Day 4. Camp Frances - Mirador Torres del Paine 🏞 - Central Sur camp.

Another early start for us, so yet again thankful for coffee bags and dehydrated breakfast. Then swiftly onto the trail, heading for the main viewpoint and objective of the trek, the Mirador Torres del Paine.Β

Super calm weather in a nice high pressure system kept us motivated to move quickly knowing later in the eve the weather window we'd been enjoying was to break and turn nasty.Β

As we were climbing towards Chileno and the windy pass, it got - unsurprisingly - windy! Even weighed down with 40kg between us and arms linked, this was quite spicy with an unwanted drop down to the valley below as a consequence of a stumble.

Big bags stashed at Chileno and summit packs taken out, we took off on the 4k push to the top. Once there, we were lucky enough to have the views all to ourselves with the weather rolling in. Talk about atmospheric! So we snapped some photos and vids, stood in awe of the granite towers. And then made the quick descent back to our big packs.

Windy pass was even windier and wetter on the way back as the rains had started! 2 hours later we made it to our final camp.

Hot shower and a local brew with our last dehydrated meal were well deserved!

Waaaaoooooowwwweeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooooo

Day 3. Paine Grande - Britanico Mirador - Camp Frances.

Nice bright and early start today for the beasting we knew was coming. Luckily the wind was still on our backs as we traveled east and into the heart of the mountains. The views were incredible!

Then it was down to our platform campsite, condensation wouldn't be an issue tonight. Quite a nice way to manage high use Camp spots for erosion in hilly forested areas.

23km, 2023m ascent.

Patagonia trekkin πŸ”πŸ’¨πŸ•

Day 2.Β  After waking to the sound of drizzle and wind (oh no!) We headed to the cook shelter to brew up coffee and prepare our dehydrated breakfast.

( Inside the park, you're not allowed to use stoves that aren't gas , or cook anywhere other than designated cook shelters at the campsites, due to the high wildfire risk. )

After a breakfast of champions, with the weather clearing to blue skies, we packed our tent and fired off up the trail to the viewpoints and suspension bridges towards Glacier Grey - part of the Southern Patagonian Ice field which is the world's 2nd largest ice field outside of polar ice caps.

After soaking up the views, we returned southward, with the crazy patagonian winds to our back (gustingΒ

85/90 km/h!!)Β

Once at Paine Grande, our camp for the night, we were glad to have opted for carrying the 4 season tent instead of going ultralight, as we watched numerous tents get absolutely FLATTENED and snapped by the winds.Β

17km, 877m ascent.

Patagonia trekkin time πŸ”πŸ’¨πŸ•

On our recent trip to Chilean Patagonia, we spent 4 days and 4 nights completing The W Trek on the southern side of the Cordillera Paine mountain range in The Torres Del Paine National Park.Β

Day 1 started with a 0530 start in Puerto Natales to get organised and jump on the 3 hr coach to the national park.Β

Once signed in and past the ranger station, we continued to our unusual trek start, a catamaran!Β Β

Arriving with plenty of time, we filled our flasks with hot coffee at the cafe and waited in the rain while hoping the weather would turn dry!

Motoring over Lake PehoΓ© we got to our start point, Paine Grande. And thankfully, the rain had stopped! (For now!) Presenting us with our first jaw dropping views of the trek at the foot of these giants.

Off we plodded to Glacier Grey, heading south into the mythical Patagonian winds. Luckily today was to be just a gentle breeze in the grand scheme ofΒ things.

12.95km, 488m ascent.

Chilean Lake District.

On our recent trip to Chilean Patagonia, we spent a week exploring the Lake District from Pucon to Puerto Montt. This included hikes, wild swimming in beautiful lakes, a day soaking up the heat in geothermal pools, and some of the most beautiful starry night skies we've ever experienced. In addition to a yellow warning active volcano which gave us nightly light shows illuminating the skyline. πŸŒ‹ wowsers.

The seasons last silver expedition for Council : complete βœ…οΈ

What a wyld 3 days in the Scottish Highlands.

Thanks as always to our gracious hosts the deer as they performed their harmonic rut calls all night and most of the day.
It's always awesome to hear nature work It's magic while trekking through the clouds and snow flurries.

And, every once in a while between the rain, winds, clouds and sleet we had some fairly epic views. Bonus!

Crackin effort as usual from our yoof squads. East Dun really has some of the hardiest students out there. Gold trips next year are gonna be ace with these jokers.
