Our Edinburgh’s Greatest Hits Music Walking Tour is back for the Fringe 2024. Led by The Scotsman’s lead rock and pop reviewer Fiona Shepherd, these 90 minute walking tours take an irreverent look at the capital’s music scenes from the folk revival of the 1950s to hot current acts such as Young Fathers.
Along the way, guests on the tours will hear tales which range from David Bowie’s pantomime near miss to Nirvana’s secret gig in the capital. The tour covers most musical genres from folk to funk, pop to punk and well... you get the idea. Name checking most of the existing music venues in Edinburgh and a good few which are no longer with us, the content is based around stories and tall tales of the performers who have stayed, played and made music in the city.
Describing the tours, Fiona said, ‘They are detailed enough to appeal to hardcore music fans but also broad enough to appeal to visitors to the city. The tour is all about the stories but it also offers an alternative way to see the city, get off the tourist trail and get under the skin of the music scene here.’
The tours have led to a book - 'Edinburgh’s Greatest Hits, A Celebration of the Capital's Music History' – published by Birlinn. These tours have attracted five star reviews on TripAdvisor. The team behind the music tour have been running hugely popular weekly tours in Glasgow since 2015 but, this August, the spotlight is on the capital’s musicians and the performances which cemented their reputations. For better and sometimes for worse.

We're really chuffed to be launching our book, Edinburgh's Greatest Hits, on Monday 22nd at Fruitmarket. Co-authors Fiona Shepherd (The Scotsman/ Glasgow Music City Tours) & Jim Byers (Edinburgh Music Lovers) will be in conversation with Born To Be Wide founder, Olaf Furniss, and will be signing copies on the night. They will highlight some of the featured stories, how the book was conceived and how the music scene can continue to thrive. Members of the audience will also be encouraged to share their own recollections and perspectives.
Following the conversation, guest DJs (TBC) including individuals featured in the book and pillars of today’s music community, will play their favourite records by Edinburgh acts, no doubt there'll be some Reekie Blinders. Tickets 👉 https://wide.ink/BTBW2022
