Situated 8 miles from the city of Edinburgh, and just 20 minutes drive from Edinburgh Airport, The Old Millhouse, Dalkeith is set on the banks of the River Esk, among 3.5 acres of private gardens. Originally dating from 1703, this listed stone house lay unloved and empty for a number of years, until the current owners rescued it in 2012 and began the huge task of sympathetic restoration. Today the

house is testament to their sheer dedication and hard work, and now you can experience their unique blend of old and new design by staying in this historic building. Our secluded setting coupled with close proximity to Edinburgh also make us an excellent venue for business meetings and corporate ‘away days’ during the week. The Old Millhouse is the perfect backdrop for film or photo shoots and can be hired on a daily basis during the week.

Charlotte Figg and Purdy Rubin came up with the idea of making all-natural, nontoxic cleaning products in 2016. At the start they ran workshops on how to make your own eco-cleaning products, using this time to research and test ideas. In 2020 Purdy & Figg was born, with Purdy’s two sons, Jack and Charlie, coming on board. In 2022 their ‘hero’ product came to market – the counter cleaner. They have grown the business into one of the fastest growing private companies in the UK, with a predicted revenue of £40m in 2024, and profits of £1m in 2023. All this from an idea that started with two old friends chatting about how they wanted to reduce plastic waste and chemical use in cleaning products.

Scottish Word of the Week is coorie.

Coorie is an old Scots word meaning to nestle or snuggle.

Often when the weather is cold and wet, we 'coorie doon' indoors and hunker down for the night. To 'coorie in' is to accept a warm hug or wrap yourself tighter in something comforting like a blanket.

The weather has been so strange this summer we're bringing out the winter words early.
