Looking for a novel Christmas present?

How about a voucher for a 'Burgh Daunder? A two hour guided walk in a part of Edinburgh of your choice with a qualified tourist guide, while making a gift to a local charity.

Or, for families with Middle to Upper Primary age children, how about 'Edinburgh's Old Town Zoo' - an easy trail on the hunt for the many different animals that 'live' on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.

Ideal for a blast of post-festive fresh air. An antidote to all that Christmas TV. And all in a good cause. What's not to like?

We want to say a huge thank you to Alistair Hector, a fabulous Blue Badge tour guide based in Edinburgh for his fantastic fundraiser for Soul Food.
-
During lockdown, Alistair offered guided walks through the empty streets of Edinburgh to help locals see their city in a new way with all proceeds going to charity. He is going to be continuing these 'Burgh Daunders until Easter 2022, showing more people around the city and aiming to raise £2022!

It's almost a year since I took my first guests on a ‘Burgh Daunder walk. 'Fundraising walks with a difference' I called them. Well, nearly 30 have taken place since and I’m delighted to say they have raised around £1800. Thank you to all who have been so generous in their support.

It has been great fun doing the walks. After a gap for the 2021 tourist season (such as it was) I am keen to resume them again over the coming months until Easter 2022. With the £2k mark in sight, I would love to wrap the project up with at least £2000 to share amongst the three charities I have chosen to support, Ferrywell Youth Project, Leith School of Art, and Soul Food Edinburgh. £2022+ for 2022!

Why not come along on a walk and help towards this target. Or please share this with someone who it would appeal to.

In the meantime you might like to read my anniversary blog reflecting on how the idea for ‘Burgh Daunders came about and what it signifies in my mind.

My only extended tour to survive the pandemic has just finished - a lovely itinerary with an Austrian couple including Edinburgh, Skye, Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield and St Andrews. Highlights included seeing Prince Charles and Camilla at Dunvegan Castle and the students' Sunday pier walk at St Andrews. One was planned, the other was not!

Did you know that the design of the wig for the statue of Adam Smith was modelled on the wig of George Washington, while his necktie is in fact based on Thomas Jefferson’s necktie? These details were added to reflect Adam Smith’s support for transatlantic trade. You can learn many more curious facts and fascinating stories with our knowledgeable guides if you join a Tall Tales Walking Tour.

Tall Tales has just two more weeks to run. Wimbledon and the Euros are over. The weather forecast is good.

Tall Tales" is up and running - a venture by the Edinburgh & SE Scotland branch of the Scottish Tourist Guides Association. I have some involvement - that's me lurking at the back in one of these photos from our inaugural tour last Thursday. We look like we're on a heist, but it's all done with Covid safety in mind, and we are a great bunch of very friendly and expert guides, who would love to welcome you on a "Tall Tales" walk.

I'm thrilled to be back doing 'Burgh Daunders. Today's was an exploration of Edinburgh's Eastern New Town, and the less well known nooks and crannies of Broughton, Bellevue, Canonmills and Stockbridge.

I'm delighted to say that my 'Burgh Daunders fundraising walks are starting up again.

For now bookings are open to two people from one household or 'bubble', but all being well I will be able to take bigger groups from late April. For an update go to my website:

'Burgh Daunders have raised £1200 for charity so far - please help me break the £2k barrier!
