For those affected and have had the aggravation of being told the airline couldn’t help with protecting you on a different flight or booking you a hotel whilst you’ve been delayed- and you’ve had to not only sort this out yourself but also pay a small fortune to get home, (which you’re now hoping to claim back from the airline and/or your travel insurance), had you booked your flights from the UK with a hotel/cruise/car hire as a package protected by ATOL, you would have been able to make one call to the emergancy number provided by the tour operator- and they would have sorted everything out for you. At no extra cost.
Back in January I was in Iceland when there were storms and Reykjavik airport closed after we had checked in to fly home. We called the emergancy number and waited for our checked in luggage to be returned to us whilst the tour operator sorted out a hotel for the night….ours wasn’t the first flight to be cancelled so people on the earlier cancellations grabbed rooms ahead of us.
All around us, we could hear the frustration of fellow passengers, most of who ended up sleeping at the airport. We were taken to a very nice hotel and returned back to the airport the following afternoon for our replacement flight home 24 hours’ later. With no stress at all (just the inconvenience of the delay).

It might cost a few pounds more to book as a package - you’re paying for the insurances that will be in place to protect your holiday - but imho it’s worth it. And, it doesn’t always cost more as tour operators have special rates that are lower than published air fares worldwide, as well as in hotels.

Someone I know in the cruise industry was on board the newest cruise line’s ship, Explora 1, last weekend from Portsmouth to Copenhagen; below is their review along with two photos they shared with me.

This new luxury brand is owned by MSC and is the first of 6 ships planned by 2028

Highlights included:

- The European hospitality with an excellent standard of food and beverage throughout the ship
- One of the best meals we have ever had at Anthology from a 3 star Michelin chef, and Japanese food heaven at Sakura
- The Emporium food hall ( like Harrods food hall, foodie heaven ) with the best pizza from a chef from Naples
- A cooking class with a master chef
- The wellness facilities ( 700 sq metres ), I loved cycling on the deck as we departed Portsmouth, and the spa, hot tubs, yoga and a fantastic gym in partnership with technogym, which includes gym kits in some of the suite and on demand classes
- Spacious public areas and 12 lounges - the astern lounge was my favourite for the sunset views and outdoor sun beds and pool
- All 461 suites have balconies and small touches such as Chess boards, a selection of books, Illy coffee machine, Champagne welcome , Binoculars , Dyson hairdryers
- There is a huge focus on CSR, reducing waste and buying local and sustainable products, the goal is to reach net zero by 2030
- It’s operates at a slower pace than other ships - arriving at different times and staying longer in port

I am hoping to visit Explora 1 later this month when she docks in Southampton.

Today I was invited to look around the cruise ship, Celebrity Silhouette before she left Southampton on her way to Ireland and Iceland. As the ship was fully booked, we were only able to look around a few of the suites (the last few photos are in a balcony cabin that I managed to persuade the nice man cleaning the room to let me quickly go into to take some photos - he was cleaning the bathroom so I couldn’t get in there).
I have photos of some of the public areas and restaurants too which I can send if you are interested.
The ship is one of their Solstice group (others being Equinox, Solstice, Reflection and Eclipse) of cruise ships which carry 2,852 to 3,046 guests depending on the ship.
I have been fortunate to have been on numerous cruise ships and I was very impressed with this one. The public areas were spacious, the cabins and suites have recently been updated and, along with the usual buffet restaurant and main dining room, there is a good choice of speciality restaurants.

With five cruise ships in the Solstice class, cruisers have more choices in terms of itineraries. You can choose from sailings to Alaska, the Bahamas, Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Asia, South America, and Australia & New Zealand. Solstice-class ships also sail longer, more exotic voyages than the ships in Celebrity’s ‘Edge Class’ ships, which are larger.

For those of you who like to cruise from the UK, Celebrity’s new ship, Apex (Edge Class) will be sailing out of Southampton next year.

For anyone who hasn’t stayed in a Parador, the Parador de Antequera is a good example of the style of hotel and types of rooms you are likely to find .
For anyone on a road trip around Andalusia, Antequera is a great location to visit with plenty of history, and not one known to many tourists (it’s also on the rail network if you’re travelling by rail around Spain).

I have just returned from the beautiful island of Crete.
I was fortunate enough to have been hosted at the luxury all inclusive Lux Me White Palace Hotel , followed by a stay at their 5 star Grecotel Creta Palace Hotel. I also visited the 5 star Grecotel Caramel Boutique Hotel and 4 star all inclusive Grecotel Marine Palace and Waterpark (in 2024 the plan is to turn this into another Lux Me property)

All amazing hotels - although part of the same group, all very different.

1. Grecotel Lux Me White Palace
This hotel ticked all the boxes! When they say ‘luxury’ that’s exactly what they offer. The hotel has recently been refurbished and upgraded to become Grectotel’s flagship hotel in their Lux Me brand.
The hotel has quite a few different room types, catering for couples wanting their own suite with a private pool and direct access to the beach, to families looking for a separate sleeping area for kids.
Every specialty restaurant in the hotel in included to eat in once during every 7 night stay. However if their is one hotel you really like, as long as there is availability, they will do their best to accommodate you. My favourite was the White Restaurant. I won’t spoil the experience by giving anything away other than to say…. you ‘have’ to eat there!

The hotel is large enough that they have very cleverly designed the facilities for the children to be located to one side of the main area, and the more luxurious rooms to the other.

2. Grecotel creta palace 5* Greece
Another 5 star hotel, this hotel is available on b & b, half board or you can include their ‘comfort pack’ which is their full board basis, with all meals taken in the main dining room and the option of 1 meal per 7 days in one of two of their speciality restaurants. If you take the half board or comfort option, you have a €20 allowance to eat in any of the speciality restaurants here or any of the other nearby hotels in the group
This hotel is approx a 25 min walk from Rethymnon and there is a bus outside so for those looking to venture out, it’s a great location.
As with the White Palace, the service was exemplary, from being greeted as you step out of your vehicle on arrival, to daily checks to make sure everything is ok, to the friendly greetings grom every member of staff as you pass.
This hotel has 22 gardeners looking after the grounds, which are beautiful. Also located on the beach, the hotel has many sea facing rooms of varying sizes and styles.
Their childrens’ facilities are excellent- including complementary lunch, dinner and snacks for kids in their own little corner of the restaurant, irrespective of the parents’ board basis.

3. Caramel Grecotel Boutique Resort
This 5 star boutique hotel only has 69 rooms, in a beautiful setting by the sea - and 22 different room types/configurations! The decor in the rooms was really beautiful, some laid out over two floors. Board basis is either b & b or half board. If you’re on half board you have a €20 allowance to eat in the speciality restaurant here or any of the other nearby hotels in the group.
They have family rooms as children are welcome here, again with their facilities at one side of the hotel so guests without kids don’t get disturbed. They have one main restaurant and an a la carte restaurant.

4. Marine Palace & Aqua Park Grecotel All In Lifestyle Resort
This all inclusive 4.5 star hotel is all about families but definitely will suit those young at heart! The main hotel is located by the sea, has numerous pools and restaurants and many rooms and villas for families of all sizes. Over the road is their new wing, Casa Marina, with another pool and restaurant, and backs on to the wsterpark.
The hotel is built next to a village and the hotel decor is very much in keeping with the surroundings, and is beautiful. It also has facilities for kids of all ages, including football, basketball and tennis courts.

I am so pleased I am able to travel again so I can report back to clients interested in booking a holiday - I’m back from a river cruise with AMAWaterways on the Danube 4 weeks ago (including Vienna and Budapest), and off to Reykjavik in 3 weeks, where I’ll be visiting both the Blue Lagoon and the new Sky Lagoon, as well as taking a Golden Circle tour with snowmobile, and a few other excursions.
Then in March I will be spending a few nights in Israel visiting Mitzpe Ramon, Eilat and the Dead Sea, looking around some of the new hotels that have opened in the last 4 years. I last visited Eilat and the Dead Sea in 2019. I have visited the northern parts of Israel numerous times since then.
I also stayed in Paphos last year, and visited 7 hotels whilst there.

Good news for those travelling to India -eVisas are being reintroduced

On Monday, in a video, High Commissioner Doraiswami said: “This service will be made with you forthwith.

“That should enable friends from the UK to travel far more easily to India.

“So welcome back. E-visas are up ahead.”

The High Commission tweeted that it was ‘delighted to confirm that e-visa facility will again be available for UK nationals travelling to India’.

The tweet added: “System upgrade is under way and the visa website will soon be ready to receive applications from friends in the UK.”

The website Indian Visa Online includes the UK in its list of countries/nationalities that are eligible for the e-visa.

I am a travel consultant with over 30 years’ experience- this gives me the knowledge to know which tour operators are going to give me the best prices for my clients.

Today I confirmed a holiday for clients touring the USA and Canada. The original quote I received from a tour operator was for £10190.00. I contacted a different company, and by tweaking two out of five of the hotels (same standard as the original quote) I have confirmed the holiday for £5600.00 (accommodation and car hire only for 4 people, no flights).
