EasyWays Poster at Polmont Station

As of last Friday 17th November an EasyWays Poster is on display at Polmont Rail Station.

A prime position at the bottom of the ramp on the "Glasgow departure" side of the station was secured some time ago and it is hoped that the advertisement will help to spread the news that a local company is offering the gateway to a walking experience, not only throughout all of Scotland, but also to two of the most historic the Pilgrim Routes in Spain and Italy.

Below is how it looks in situ.

52 Ways to Walk: Walking for Wellness and Joy

We like to keep all our EasyWays clients informed of anything we come across that might be of interest and this book, written by the aptly named Annabel Streets, explains the hidden benefits of walking.

The book reviews describe the content and we thought it would make for good reading in advance or as a companion on one of our long distance walking holidays.

Group Tours ‘23 Commence

This week sees the first of our group tours for 2023. Walkers from France will arrive into Scotland on Friday for a week of walking in Glencoe and the Cairngorms before spending a final night in Edinburgh to take in the some of the sights and sounds of our capital, city.

This year our group guided tours will visit a myriad of locations around the country including all the standard long distance routes such as the West Highland Way, Great Glen and Speyside Way with the addition of the more remote places of Orkney, Cape Wrath, Sandwood Bay, Skye, The Outer Hebrides and last but not least the Southern Hebridean islands of Ghia, Islay and Jura.

No matter your choice is self-guided walking, or if you like the idea of being part of a group, give EasyWays a call to be assured of excellent advice and service.

West Highland Way

The time is fast approaching the start of the walking season in Scotland and once again the West Highland Way tops the list within our walking community.

There is no doubt the most atmospheric part of the walk is the stage through Glencoe with its brooding mountains on either side and sense of history that pervades to present day.

This stems from the notorious Glencoe Massacre that took place just beyond the Devil’s Staircase and involved the treacherous killing of members of the Clan MacDonald by the Clan Campbell in1692.

A very revealing insight into the events surrounding this period in Scotland’s past is available on Dan Snow’s History Hit podcast by clicking the below link.

Glencoe in the Scottish highlands is a beautiful landscape with a dark past. While folks from all over the world travel to this beautiful valley to hike, in 1692 it was the site of a treacherous ma...

Walking in the Outer Hebrides

For an insight into this fantastic location it will be well worth looking into BBC Scotland tomorrow night Thursday 5th January at 8.30pm.

At a time where "getting away from it all" is becoming more difficult these islands still offer a feeling of isolation within a culture and history dating back to a Neolithic age.

EasyWays offers both Guided and Self Guided walking across the whole archipelago from Vatersay in the south to the Butt of Lewis in the north. Check website for details.

River City actor Iain Robertson embarks on the 200-mile walk across the Outer Hebrides.

Via Francigena - la strada per Roma

Last week our Manchester Group embarked on their annual walk, this time to the Province of Lazio with a 100km walk back into the eternal city of Rome. Five wonderful days of walking in autumn sunshine over archetypal Italian landscapes and through picturesque ancient villages made for a great tour.

Trails littered with endless fallen chestnuts, so prevalent at this time of year, the creation of the local Zuppa de Castagne (Italian Chestnut Soup) which was delicious and a must try for all.

We ended with an extra day in Rome to take in the city sights before heading off home with memories to last a lifetime.

Yesterday we spent a day in the company of the Walk for Jock Group on the West Highland Way.

EasyWays followers will know this group take to the 96 mile route each year in aid of local charities in the Linlithgow area. The overall total funds raised is forecast to reach £180,000 In this, the 11th year of this memorial walk named after Jock the brother of Davie Patterson the group founder.

The 14 mile section from Crianlarich to Bridge of Orchy was a joy to walk in wonderful late summer sunshine with the customary “refreshment” at the end to make for a perfect day in the great outdoors.

We were off to the islands on Friday to spend a long week-end walking and exploring the Inner Hebrides, this time with a final destination of Islay. This beautiful island has much to offer in walking routes and has, of course, a large concentration of whisky distilleries that brings enthusiasts from across the world to see in person where their ‘dram’ originates.

Last week we spent a wonderful time in the Outer Hebrides travelling south to north over the course of 9 days.

The islands offer an opportunity to walk and visit this remote area of Scotland where you can experience miles of white sandy beaches and aquamarine waters with no one else in sight.

The Rob Roy Way

Last week we headed north to Killin for three days on the Rob Roy Way. The walk alongside the southern shore of Loch Tay to emerge at Kenmore and then Aberfeldy before the final stage to Pitlochry is a favourite with EasyWays as a short break walking tour.

After a night in Pitlochry we returned via Loch Tummel before heading south to re-join the official route once again at Kenmore back to Killin. Passing through the small hamlets at Acharn, Ardtalnaig and Ardeonaig (where the hotel is back in use and new accommodation is also being constructed) make this route a pleasure to walk.

We ended the tour with a climb up Sròn a'Chlachain, the high viewpoint overlooking Killin for a magnificent view down Loch Tay.

The Rob Roy Way offers a quieter alternative to the often busy West Highland Way and availability is still good for this year.

Cape Wrath Trail Guided Group Walk

Last week we welcomed a group of ladies from Australia who left the winter climes “Down Under” in favour of a trek in the Scottish Highlands during our summer.

As might have been expected the term summer was stretching it a bit as far as the weather was concerned however our group, from Melbourne and Sydney were made of stern stuff and thoroughly enjoyed their week among the elements on the Cape Wrath Trail under the expert guidance of Susan Young.

They have now moved on to Ireland and we wish them a great second week and safe journey home.

Speyside Way Option

EasyWays offers the Speyside Way as a fantastic opportunity to experience the Scotland's biggest concentration of whisky distilleries on the route between Buckie and Aviemore.

It is now possible to fast track the entry point of the Way by taking a train from Inverness to Keith to enjoy a scenic journey on the Speyside Railway to Dufftown, part of the spur that connects the town to Craigellachie and Aberlour.

From there it is a matter of completing the standard route to Aviemore. EasyWays can assist with making arrangements for this option, just request the information while making your booking enquiry.

New Flight Connection to Santiago

It might have passed unnoticed but Ryanair have introduced a new flight connection between Edinburgh and Santiago de Compostela providing Scottish based walkers a much quicker route to the Caminos in Northern Spain.

The Camino, that has its origins in the 10th Century as a pilgrim route, is a fantastic “must do" experience where the rolling hillsides and farmland has many similarities to Scotland (thankfully with the exception of the weather.)

Easyways offers the final stages of the Camino Frances from Saria or alternatively, the Camino Portugues from Tui on the Portuguese / Spain border and the Camino Finnesterre (to witness that magnificent sunset over the Atlantic) as part of our international options.

All walks last a week so instead of heading to the crowded beaches of the Mediterranean and a sun bed of inactivity, take this opportunity to visit a different part of these two countries, exploring quiet villages and tasting the local foods and wine to return home with a feel good factor and sense of achievement.

Cape Wrath Trail North
Departs 22nd May – last two places remaining !!

Now, there is mainstream walking in Scotland on the traditional long distance walks such as the West Highland or Great Glen Ways or there is something quite different.

Somewhere that offers a complete sense of being in a remote place against a background of absolute tranquillity.

The northern section of the Cape Wrath Trail from Ullapool to Cape Wrath and Durness offers just that. Walk in the company of a small group of like minded people and enjoy that sense of achievement of completing the 95 mile route through some of the most spectacular scenery Scotland has to offer.

Contact the Polmont Office for more details and a special price.
