Very tricky conditions today for LANTRA 4x4 training. Very slippery, low traction, lots of sliding, but really good for route planning and ground reading.

Understanding how your vehicle is likely to move around as you drive over tricky terrain is something you have to plan ahead for. Setting up the car, gear selection, speed and positioning the vehicle in advance is key to safely getting from A to B.

Do you love laning? Do you love nature?

Of course you do, so our Salisbury Plain Wildlife Tour next weekend will be right up your street! Or byway.

We’ll be touring the plain looking for target birds and mammals including Harriers, Owls, Deer, Hare, Corn Buntings and the iconic Great Bustards. There is also a chance we will connect with the 100,000 or so Starlings that come in to roost in the impact area most nights.

If you have binoculars or a spotting scope do bring them, if not you can borrow the 3 bins and 2 scopes we’ll provide for sharing.
Wildlife being what it is there’s a chance we won’t see anything – ‘that’s birding’ as they say - but the lanes will always be there and we’ll have a great time touring the open areas and enjoying the views and perhaps a teeny bit* of mud. (*Ok, loads of it.)

It may rain, and Stuart may go on about birds quite a lot. Suitable for most 4x4s – AT tyres and recovery points recommended minimum.

This weekend we were joined by 40 Scouts for a 4x4 Driving & Bushcraft experience. All the Scouts drove our Disco 2 and Jeep with an instructor at our training site and learnt some new skills from our Bushcraft expert Mitch. To complete the experience we deliberately got the Jeep stuck and working with rope and pulley blocks the Scouts had to manually recover the vehicle.

Whilst the Scouts learnt to drive we also trained a new Defender Owner how their vehicle works before exploring the Surrey Hills.

The culmination of a busy week. Lots of LANTRA 4x4 training, fireworks tour, drive in the woods experiences and today was our bushcraft mechanics course. Full service for Borris and replacing a very worn wheel bearing and new shocks for the Disco. All done in the woods with basic tools and a fair amount of tea & coffee (occasional swearing).

LANTRA 4x4 Off Road Driver training today for a candidate from Hydro International with his Ford Ranger Wildtrack. Very capable vehicle even on road tyres and huge side steps (which should definitely come off). These vehicles are very large! Carefully navigating around our training site requires concentration, ground reading and planning.

A great days training, candidate successfully passed both ORV1 & ORV2, well done Jo.

Our recent Wye Valley Lane Tour.

The magnificent Milky out doing a lane tour recce today. A new, ‘suitable for all’ route across farmland and through woods with great views. Also some challenge and probably the deepest ford I’ve encountered. Watch this space for dates to come!
