We’ve been quiet here for a while because of sad news, the loss of our beloved resident dog Ernie. His memory will live on with the wonderful photos of him remaining at Meadow View Cottage ❤️

Pannage season is nearly here! 🐖🍂🍁

Pannage is an ancient practice still used in the New Forest. New Forest Commoners send their pigs out to eat fallen acorns and other nuts; green acorns are poisonous to the New Forest ponies and cattle, which roam the forest most of the year.

Up to 600 pigs and piglets will work their way through the forest - it is the only time of year that the pigs are allowed to ‘roam’ the open forest; the rest of the time they are kept in their smallholdings by the commoners. Pannage is no longer carried out in many areas of the country but can still be observed annually in the New Forest National Park.

This year, Pannage season in the New Forest is from Monday 11 September to Friday 17 November.
