Fort Augustus Abbey began its life historically as a military fort - part of the English army's response to Culloden Battle and the Jacobites. It was one of 3 such Forts built in 1729 - Fort Augustus, Fort William, and Fort George (which still stands today for you to visit). In the early 1880's Lord Lovat gifted the Fort to the Benedictine Fathers who expanded upon the fort and remodeled it to the Abbey we know today. As such, only one wing of the fort buttress survives today, to the side of our Monastery 10 apartment, and where our Brothers 7 apartment is situated on top of the buttress, at the back of the abbey overlooking Loch Ness.
Initially the abbey was a boarding school, of which many of the historic features such as drinking fountains remain within the building today. Along with the old Boating House, which is now a restaurant within the grounds overlooking Loch Ness. Today the abbey has been remodeled into holiday apartments and cottages for your enjoyment whilst exploring the Scottish Highlands.
