Did somebody say sunshine?!

Don't know about you but it's been a pretty wet one so far!
Usually we are pretty happy with that but the last couple of months have been wet in all the wrong ways.

Now the sun is shining, we believe the best place to be, is in the sea!

Do you agree?

One of the best things about doing what we do, are the people we get to meet!

This beautiful flowering plant, Thrift (Armeria maritima) is one we see often whilst out exploring the coast throughout summer.

Otherwise known as sea pink or lady's cushion, it is an evergreen herb and grows in some of the most unexpected places, a very hardy plant when you consider the wind, waves and salinity of the coast!

In Gaelic it is called tonna chladaich, meaning beach wave.

Even more interestingly, in the Outer Hebrides Thrift was used in herbal medicine. It would be boiled with milk and given as a remedy for tuberculosis. It was even drunk as a cure for a hangover!

Thrift certainly adds a splash of colour to the algae and barnacle covered rocks!

Scotland's coastal communities have lived by the sea for millennia. Some of the oldest houses in Europe can be found in Orkney's Skara Brae, a neolithic settlement on the rocky coast of the Scottish Island that dates back to around 3000BC, before the Egyptian pyramids were built!

In more modern history, Scotland's highlanders lived off the land and sea, with boats being the main mode of transport of both goods and people.

Many coastal settlements are left deserted now, after the highland clearances and the advance of cars and roads. Although, many remain and flourish to this day.

To explore Scotland's coast is to reconnect with the history of our country and ancestors. It is an amazing experience to stand among the old village buildings before exploring the waters the locals would have lived off.

We thought we'd let you in on how the beginning of 2024 has been for us at seatrekscotland.
In all honesty it has been pretty damp and rocky, an environment we would usually thrive in..

We had a fairly large flood in our home late in 2023 resulting in a lot of damage with us eventually being uprooted and moved into temporary accommodation pretty suddenly.

As stressful as the move was, we are delighted to be accommodated by in their stunning Maclean House. We feel very at home here already. The surrounding landscape of Glenloy is an incredible place to be based and ideal for exploring, as well as witnessing some of Scotland's most iconic wildlife.

We even got to ski in and out of the house when we experienced Scotland week long mega winter ๐Ÿ˜…

Things are settling down now and we are very excited about the upcoming summer season as we have some pretty big plans.

โ€œNo matter how much falls on us, we keep plowing ahead. Thatโ€™s the only way to keep the roads clear.โ€ โ€”Greg Kincaid

We have had an incredible 2023!

Thankyou to everyone who has been part of the adventure!

We can't wait to do it all over again in 2024.

For now, our dancing is for snow, but soon enough we'll dip our toes, back into the ever calling sea.

All the best for 2024 we hope to see you in the water!
