Caig Falls (Eas Chia-Eag), and the witches pool/cauldron.
2 stunning waterfalls at the east end of Loch Arkaig with a dark and murky legend, dating back to when the Clan Cameron owned the territory, who’s wealth was primarily in cattle.
If illness ever struck the herd, witchcraft was often suspected.
When the cattle of Cameron of Locheil fell ill the local Bana Bhuidseach (witch) was hunted and chased over the falls, falling to her death in the deep pool below.

Part of the film, ‘Rob Roy’ was filmed here, where Rob Roy (Liam Neeson), leaps from the waterfall to escape from the redcoats.

One of my cousins (I have a lot of cousins), has been visiting this week, yesterday (it was a beautiful sunny day) we took a seal island cruise with Cruise Loch Linnhe.

Chose great seats and made ourselves comfortable, up the top deck, in the sunshine.

Before we even set off it started raining, but, being stubborn (I say stoic 🤣 some may disagree) Scots, we thought it would just be a shower and would pass,
(I should mention here that I was just in a hoodie and my cuz was in a showerproof jacket).

Within a few minutes it was torrential rain, we finally conceded and went downstairs into the enclosed area.

We had some hot chocolate and shortbread, which was delicious.

It was grey, misty, and rainy, but it was still a lovely trip.

We saw the most photographed shipwreck in Scotland, learned a bit about the sawmill, saw a whale… okay it’s a boat shaped like a whale and is, apparently, up for sale, saw a fish farm, (😢 don’t get me started), and saw a muscle farm that I didn’t know we had, (I don’t eat them), they are just left to do their own thing with no interventions and they clean the water which is great.

There wasn’t much of seal island exposed as the tide was high, so no seals basking on the island but we were lucky and saw 3 common seals in the water, they were very cheeky and playful, jumping out of the water and showing off.

Once on dry land we heated up with a cup of tea and ordered a takeaway from Spice Tandoori Fort William which was delicious, as always.

Tomdoun Dam, a mindfulness day to just “be”.
This is a very remote area outside Glengarry with no phone or internet signal. Absolutely stunning scenery though.

So true, although today is the driest day we’ve had for a wee while so make the most of it and get out and about. 🙌

Took a trip to Corpach basin (part of the Caledonian Canal, Fort William), and Caol (pronounced cool) beach at the weekend.
Finally managed to get some photos of the famous “shipwreck “, plus a few of an interesting boat on the canal.
Even though it was pouring today we managed a 20 minute rain free window, so the photos are a bit moody.

The Shipwreck:
The MV Dayspring, (1975) was originally a herring and mackerel fishing boat operating in the North Sea, measuring 26 meters. It was subsequently renamed the Golden Harvest.
Following the retirement of its skipper, the vessel was sold and moved to Kilkeel in Northern Ireland, where it resumed its fishing operations.

Making its way back to Scotland in 2001, the vessel docked at Kinlochleven Pier on Loch Leven until 2009. There were ambitions to convert the boat into a floating restaurant, but this idea never came to fruition.

Rising oil prices and dwindling fish populations forced its retirement. In 2009, the old boat was moved to Camusnagaul Bay on Loch Linnhe.

On December 8, 2011, a severe storm struck, causing the vessel to break free, local coastguards aided in controlling its landing on the beach between the villages of Corpach and Caol where it has remained since, and has evolved into a well-known, and much photographed landmark in Fort William.

The original Fort William railway station was opened in 1984. Very informative post, thank you West Highland Museum

So… We, (Highland African Beats) played at the Glengarry Highland Games - Scotland on Saturday and it was so much fun!

I joined our local Community African Drumming group when I moved back to Fort William in 2018, and have been loving playing drums ever since.

The Highland Games was wonderful and all the organisers couldn’t have made us more welcome.

Looking forward to playing more gigs in the future.

Great advice for visitors. There are far too many accidents on our local roads.
17/06/2024

Great advice for visitors. There are far too many accidents on our local roads.

If you’re visiting or planning to visit the Highlands and Islands, you’re probably coming to see the stunning landscapes and the popular driving routes through them. Many of the roads are narrow, winding, and technical. There are lots of unpredictable hazards on rural roads and the changeable weather conditions and high volumes of traffic can make driving particularly challenging. You need to be careful, considerate, safe and competent to drive on these roads and you will be expected to know and drive to the Scotland's road safety standards, rules and laws.

Unfortunately, we see a disproportionately high number of serious and fatal road traffic collisions on Scotland’s rural roads, particularly around the summer season.
• 62% of all deaths on Scotland’s roads happen in the countryside.
• Over 700 people were killed or seriously injured on country roads in 2020.

These collisions have a devastating effect on those involved and their families as well as an enormous impact on the local communities and road network. Most of these collisions are avoidable.

Here’s some essential advice to stay safe with links to this advice in different languages:
• Drive on the left, if you normally drive on the right, always be vigilant and take particular care when setting off and negotiating junctions – put something on your wrist or dashboard to remind you
• Plan your journey - Take regular breaks and only undertake reasonable and manageable journeys – fatigue is a significant factor in fatal collisions – check traffic and weather conditions https://orlo.uk/HUn1d
• Look out for vulnerable road users - motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders are particularly vulnerable and make up a significant proportion of those injured or killed
• Don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive
• Don’t use your mobile phone when driving
• Speed limits are in ‘mph’, drive at a speed that is safe for the road, weather and traffic conditions
• Find safe places to stop off the road, don’t stop on the road to look at views or take pictures
• If a queue builds up behind you on any two-way carriageway or single-track road, use passing places and laybys as frequently as necessary to allow others to pass
Most importantly, if you are not confident driving on technical rural roads, then there is many other great ways to travel round the Highlands and Islands.

I want to take a minute to wish my Dad Neil, a very Happy Fathers Day.
I know some of you have met my Dad, he’s a great Dad and always there for me.
He helped when I started doing up the house, teaching me how to fit the kitchen, (he did the tiles too), how to wallpaper, and even though he’s retired, is still my go to handyman.
Thank you Dad. Xx
