Fowey Festival of Arts & Literature 2024

Next Friday 10th May sees the Fowey Festival’s annual return to the town with events which include authors , music , guided walks, an Art Trail and Secret Gardens all featuring in what looks to be a really entertaining week. I’ve been lucky to bag myself a couple of tickets including Caroline Quentin talking about her new book “Drawn to the Garden” (something I’m finding is bringing me lots of joy too) . Join us tomorrow night 8pm on BBC Two for a brand new episode of Saving Lives At Sea.

We'll be joining the crews of RNLI Queensferry Lifeboat, Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat, The Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station, Fowey RNLI and RNLI Portishead as they help those that have been caught out.

Artisan Market Comes to Fowey
Always admire the skills and dedication of small producers so Fowey is now lucky to have its own Artisan Market Fowey Artisan Market held in Fowey Town Hall ( above the Museum) every first Wednesday in the month between 10am -3pm. Managed to pop down this week so here’s a snapshot of some of these wonderful artisans who will be at the market regularly.

Delicious selection of Italian tapas called Chicetti on offer at Brown Sugar this week. Tempted to have an Aperol Spritz to go with it but I opted for a refreshing brew instead served in their cute little red enamel teapots .

Whoopa of a Weekend !
Had to pinch myself over the weekend with this crazy warm weather , felt like the middle of June not October ! Time for Hank's Crab & Snack Shack to close for the season so headed down to Berrils Yard for our foody fix. Never disappoints, Cornish Crab Sandwich & incredible Mackerel fillets with pickled fennel & aioli - just so delicious 😋

Wandering down to Caffa Mill on the weekend and glimpsed this gorgeous little fishing boat being restored at Fowey Boatyard. Loved the little cabin on the front , some protection for the skipper from the ravages of the sea!

A Tale of Two Liners

Fowey welcomed Saga Travel UK Spirit of Adventure cruise liner into the harbour today and was amazed to be told that it apparently weighs 10,000 or so tons heavier than the impressive The World residential cruise ship that visited in June. It can also carry 999 passengers compared to only 200 on The World .

I’m a bit more of a land lubber myself , never fancied a cruise but love living by the sea and watching these giants arrive in Fowey Harbour is always an impressive sight 🛳️

So Much to Look Forward To
Fowey has started gearing itself up for the historic which starts this Sunday 13th August . Really fun design on this year’s programme designed by Ian Madgwick and in complete contrast to the 1962 version although I do also really love a bit a vintage ephemera too!
As a bit of a warm up to this years Regatta events Fowey RNLI have organised an Ex Lifeboat Rally on Saturday 12th August at Berrils
Yard Pontoon between 11am -4pm . It will be fascinating to see how things have also changed over the years in Lifeboat design - the dedication, commitment and bravery of the RNLI volunteers always inspiring 😍

Mission to Seafarer’s
Tomorrow Sunday 25th June is the Day of the Seafarer, a charitable organisation providing care, compassion and support to seafarers from around world for more than 167 years.

It operates from 22 ports in the Uk Fowey being one of them.

When we first opened our doors at Retreat to Fowey I had bought this wooden sign from an antique shop in Landeilo not realising the significance it would have coming to Fowey. Many of you will recognise it as it sits on the wall in the hallway in No1 .

The Mission to Seafarers base in Fowey is located at Caffa Mill and their work in supporting seafarers is so important with 90% of our goods and fuels coming by sea . You can read more about this and how to support them

Look North

Traveling back down South today picking my daughter up from Newcastle Uni and been thinking of the North Side of Fowey . How many visitors venture to this side of town I wonder ? Or do most people stop and turn round at the end of Fore Street ? If so you are missing out - walk on along Passage & North Street past Berrils Yard and onto Station Road where you’ll find lots to see, do and eat at the Caffa Mill end of town where the car ferry crosses the river to Boddinick. Seek and you will find ! ☕️🛶🌯🍦

A Taste of La Dolce Vita Comes to Fowey ! 🇮🇹
So excited to see our dear friends Luca & Michaela open on Station Road in Fowey last week. Bringing the best of Italian fare in the form of panini’s filled with delicious organic Italian meats and cheese , salads , yummy homemade cakes and a deli counter full of tempting goodies served with passion in a really classy café interior.

Wishing them all the luck in the world for their new venture.

Fancy a Swim Anyone?
We’ve been having some glorious weather here in Fowey and managed to have an afternoon down at Readymoney Cove . Wish I’d brought my swimming cosi , the water looked so inviting. Must be better prepared next time ! Settled for a delicious Shipwreck ice cream instead as modelled by Hubby from so all not lost 😍🍦☀️

Fowey Maritime Heritage
Nothing like messing about in boats . Fowey Harbour was bustling with them yesterday evening with the white sails of The Troy and the brightly coloured sails of the Fowey River Class racing out to the headland and on the river. Both boats are particularly special to Fowey, The Troy’s named after the Troy Town novels by Sir Arthur Quiller Couch who lived on The Esplanade and the Fowey River Class dinghy have been built in Fowey since the 1950’s , their design created to encourage people to build their own boats.
