Hebridean Whale Cruises, Gairloch

Hebridean Whale Cruises, Gairloch ORCA1 THE N #1 WHALE WATCHING BOAT IN SCOTLAND!!! Every year we encounter the most Whales, Dolphins, Seals, Puffins, rare and pelagic birds.
(205)

We are proud to provide our customers with by far the premier sightings from any vessels operating from Gairloch. For at least the last 3 years Orca1 has been the N #1 whale watching boat in Scotland(boat based sightings submitted to the national cetacean monitoring unit)! Mid May to Mid September is traditionally the best time for encountering the whales, peaking from mid June onwards. In the earl

y season the Cetaceans are on the move and occasionally we encounter some of the Great Whales and unusual sightings like Pilot Whales. Minke Whale sightings are quite sporadic until May. From late August we have a wider range of species including Risso’s and White-beaked Dolphins. Occasional Humpback, Fin and Sei whale too. We have four resident Cetaceans in the Hebrides as well –
Harbour Porpoise, Bottlenose Dolphin, Orca (Killer Whale) and Risso’s Dolphin so these can be seen at anytime of the year. Basking Sharks tend to be late arrivals this far north, so it’s usually late August onwards for a good chance of encountering them. Please note that these are wild animals and come and go usually because of the availability of their prey species, so sightings cannot be guaranteed at any time of the year. But we go where no other boats go! It’s not just a trip around the bay we actively seek out these animals and we normally know where the Minke Whales are feeding!

Our 4hr cruise on Saturday 27th July turned in to mission collect Humpback P**p 💩 Our guests definitely enjoyed the cruise with 4 sightings of Humpbacks and 3 separate breaches from different individuals and 2 Fin Whales. Incredible!

But I think it was fair to say Steve and Shenley definitely enjoyed the collecting of the p**p too… for scientific purposes not for pleasure may we add. But what a pleasure it was! 💩

This humpy was having quite the feast a few days ago!! Just look at all the krill trying to escape the Humpbacks mouth 🐋
Maybe a few krill lives were spared that day but this is what it’s all about and why these big mammals are showing up more and more in our Scottish waters! FOOD and lots of it!
A sign of plentiful food sources around here attracts our big beasts like the Humpbacks and Fin whales! With more and more sightings year round hopefully this is a sign of more good to come for us here in the UK.
For more information on our species found here check out the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. This charitable organisation carries out research work for many of our cetaceans and have contributed a lot to our current understanding of these species behaviours and movements in Scotland. As well as the help of the public! Citizen science has helped this charity massively and continues to everyday with the work of Whale track. Everyone’s contributions of sightings whether by boat or on land has added to the knowledge of our species passing through or resident here all year round 🐋🐳🐬

What a trip that was! Fair to say our guests on board that day including our Skipper Steve Truluck At Sea and Shenley experienced something incredibly special.

Perhaps a once in a lifetime experience for many of us. It is truly magical when wildlife decides to interact with humans on their terms and all you can help but think is what are they thinking! We look at them in such awe and amazement, are they thinking the same? Who knows… but these are memories we will cherish forever and our respect for these intelligent animals will only ever increase.

So thank you Davies for giving us something we all will never forget 🐋

On 09/07/2024 we had the pleasure of meeting a Humpback whale that we haven’t previously seen.🐋😊

Shenley Lloyd (our office manager), joined Steve on the 4 hour morning cruise and after an encounter with a Fin whale suddenly spotted a Humpback whale in mid-air! Skipper Steve Truluck At Sea turned the boat and everyone aboard got to see the huge mammal full breach 1 kilometre away!!

We then had a wonderful encounter with the whale which at one point decided to swim beneath the boat!

We were informed that this was an uncatalogued Humpback whale in Scottish waters by Lyndsay of Scottish Humpback ID/ Firth Of Forth Whale And Dolphins. and so Shenley was given the honour of naming the whale.

Meet ‘Lloyd!’ 😊🐋

All sightings as usual logged on the excellent, free Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust ‘Whale Track’ app.

It's not always Whales & Dolphins we see on our cruises here on the West Coast.

A recent photo taken by one of our guests David on our 4hr Ultimate 'Orca 1' cruise of a Great Northern Diver! What a beautiful bird they are.

We always appreciate when people send in their lovely photos taken on board our cruises so we can share them 😊 So if you've recently joined us on a cruise this season or previously send them over to us on our social media pages or at [email protected]

Frequently asked questions -
1) WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO COME?
a) Mid-May to the end of October and avoid any U.K. school holidays if you can as it's not so busy and we can stay out a bit longer if required, plus it may be easier to re-book you if the weather isn't so great!
b) Best time for Orcas? Resident all year, but you have to be very lucky! From May to July there's an influx of orca to our region from Iceland. Try combining a cruise with us and a trip up to Caithness/Northern Isles in May-September.
c) Humpback Whales? Best chance in June and September/October.
2) WHAT HAPPENS IF THE CRUISE IS CANCELLED?
We will transfer you to another cruise if we can or refund your payment if we cancel the cruise. Full T&C's are on the booking page. We always recommend spending a few days in the area and booking more than one cruise with us if you are specifically coming up to go Whale watching!!!
