Glasgow was radiant with sunshine this morning. Behind me is possibly the most famous traffic cone wearer in the world, the Duke of Wellington sitting astride his horse Copenhagen. The Neo-classical pile to the left is the GOMA modern art gallery, at one time the residence of to***co lord Andrew Cunningham.

This cheeky chappy is a Tontine Head. At one time it was part of the Tontine building where father of economics Adam Smith mingled with Glasgow's to***co lords and in doing so helped create the global economic system that COP26 delegates will soon be discussing.

Just one or the fantastic things you can see on the Merchant City Walking Tour. Book now!

The To***co Lord's House in Miller Street was built by John Craig in 1775 as the residence of wealthy merchant Robert Finlay. Now occupied by the Scottish Civic Trust, the building is a reminder of the opulence that Glasgow's to***co lords once enjoyed.

The Britannia Panopticon is the world's oldest existing music hall and is where Stan Laurel made his stage debut aged 15. It is functioning again, but as you can see there is still a lot of work needing done. Please donate, share and help them get a truss for their new curtains.

The 1824 Ramshorn is the only Scottish church to be built by English Gothic Revival architect Thomas Rickman. Industrialist and philanthropist David Dale is buried in its graveyard as are to***co lords Andrew Buchanan and John Glassford. The first Canadian prime minister Sir John A MacDonald was also born in its parish.

The 17th C. Merchant Steeple is one of the oldest buildings in Glasgow and was once part of the Merchant House now located in George Square. At one time wealthy merchants called to***co lords would climb to watch out for their tall ships coming back from the American Colonies stuffed full of sugar, to***co and rum.

At the heart of the Merchant City is Glasgow Cross and its wonderful 17th C. Tolbooth Steeple. Just to the left of the tower is the Purple Cat Cafe where you can enjoy a coffee in the company of lots of cats. 😸

One of the highlights of the Glasgow Merchant City Walking Tour is the 17th C. Tron Steeple. It was once part of the Tron Church; however the rest of the building was burnt down in the 18th C. by the Hellfire Club, a group of upper middle class young males inspired by dangerous republican writers such as Thomas Paine.

Apparently they didn't mean to burn it down. It was an accident!
