On 3 July in 1850 CE, two famous jewels – the Kohinoor diamond and the Timur 'Ruby' – were taken by Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace.

A sham ceremony was organised to show that they are gifted by Maharaja Duleep Singh to Queen Victoria

The spectacular Timur ‘Ruby' was actually a ‘spinel’ that weighed a whopping 353.5 carats. It is named after the Turco-Mongol ruler, Timur, who took it with him when he invaded in 1398 CE. This jewel was passed on through his descendants and sometime in the 17th century CE, it reached the Safavid Emperor of Persia, Shah Abbas.

In 1612 CE, Shah Abbas had gifted the Timur Ruby to Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who engraved his name on it along with that of his father, Akbar. The stone was inherited by Shah Jahan and was even set in the famous Peacock Throne.

After changing hands many times, the Timur Ruby ended up with Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh and eventually in the British treasure. The British annexed Punjab in 1849 CE and took possession of the Kohinoor and Timur Ruby.

The young and innocent boys, Sahibzada (Prince) Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh attained martyrdom on December 26, 1705, for standing up for what was righteous and just.

He was the son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, born on 4 December 1807 to Mahitab Kaur, Maharaja's first wife. Sher Singh grew up to be a handsome, broad-chested young man given to fashionable dress and lavish jewellery. His soldierly mien made him popular with the army. He loved hunting and hawking, and devoted attention to cultivating European interests and hobbies in the company of foreigners serving at the Sikh court.
