Calton Hill and Nelsons Monument.

This monument Is Nelson's Tower, and is a memorial to Admiral Lord Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, it is designed to look like an upturned telescope in respect of Nelson’s Naval career.
At the top of the tower there is a latter addition, a time ball and one of the few in existence still functioning. At exactly 1pm each day, when the 1 O'clock gun fires from the battlements of Edinburgh Castle the ball is dropped down the length of it's supporting mast giving both an audible (the gun) and a visual signal (the ball) to any ship anchored in the Firth of Forth approximately five kilometres to the north.

Before the advent of reliable naval timepieces it was important to have an accurately set Chronometer on board any sailing ship, knowing the time of day would allow the Captain to stay on course while circumnavigate the globe, a few degrees out can mean 100s of miles off-coarse at the end of a long voyage.
Knowing the exact time while at sea is crucial, as, at exactly 12:00 mid day the sun is at 180°, exactly to the south so a Sextant could be used to plot the ships position on a map. Incidentally, the time ball was invented in 1818 by a Midlothian man named Capt Robert Wauchope R.N.
