We had a very special visitor last weekend. Herbie (a 1973 VW Beetle) came to stay with his humans. They had a great time at the annual vintage car show held at Thirlestane Castle.
There are some wonderful driving roads close by. Come and stay and you could have your own fabulous adventures!

Chilly morning in the Scottish Borders with our first snowfall of the year. Beautifully cosy and warm inside with the log burner though!

We are utterly delighted with our new painting of the Twin Law Cairns from Brian Turnbull. Brian is an artist (and picture framer) based in Coldstream and runs Old School Framing. His art focuses on southern Scotland and the north-east of England. www.brianjturnbull.co.uk

The Twin Law Cairns are visible from the cottage and sit on the Southern Upland Way in the Lammermuir Hills.

The cairns were built to commemorate two brothers, separated at birth, who ended up on opposing sides in a battle between the Scots and the Saxons.

Put forward as the best fighters by either side, the brothers fought to settle the battle in a one-on-one fight.

Despite being heavily injured, the Scot killed the Saxon.

However, after the fight he found out the Saxon’s true identity and that he had killed his twin brother. Appalled at what he had done, he removed his bandages and lay down beside his brother to die.

There is also a poem written about the legend of the Twin Law Cairns but that is a post for another day.
