The Drawing Room

A little before and after our renovation this year. When we moved into the house we had a valley leaking in the middle of this room and used to put mixing bowls out if it was raining which our toddler would try to sit in! 🤦🏻‍♀️ It’s come a long way! Still in need of a rug though!!

A Buckley Painting

I had a very exciting day yesterday as I met with a wonderful couple at the house. His grandparents owned EH for about 60 years and he would visit them as a child. We spent a fascinating afternoon walking round the house and gardens and talking about how it’s changed and our plans for the future. His mother commissioned this beautiful painting of the house. My guess is it’s taken from a 1920s photograph as the glass roof of the veranda can just be seen which was missing later. It took my breath away when I saw it, it’s amazing to see the house looking so open without the hedges we have now. As a child, he told me he could remember a goblin-like statue who used to sit on the porch. I’ve never heard of this statue before but, when you look carefully, you can just spy him sitting on the porch wall!

The Snug

I’ve always loved the decoration on this door frame, but I thought the details were lost when they were painted the same colour as the rest of the frame. So I thought I’d try my hand at a little bit of gilding and I’m really pleased with how it’s worked out - it feels really special and draws attention to each individual leaf shape. Turns out children’s paintbrushes are also useful to adults!

Work has continued in small ways in the main house this week. Starting with the bank holiday Monday when we decided to pull the horrible carpet out of our bedroom and throw it out of the window. We had a reshuffle of furniture in there too so I’m thinking that will be the next room we work on. After ripping the bedroom carpet out and finding the glorious (and pretty perfect) wide original boards underneath I was inspired and ripped out the landing carpet too! Not worthy of a grand reveal but it feels like the house is starting to breath and it’s very exciting to be moving on to a new room. I had been planning the kitchen colour scheme but as I’ve got this carpet out and started peeling old wallpaper off the walls it kind of moves this room up the list. I’ve never given much thought to a scheme for this room. It’s very distinctive in its shape with a ceiling in line with the roof and a lovely big window overlooking the front garden. I’m thinking of chinoiserie and I’ve ordered a lot of wallpaper samples!

The Snug

Speaking of weird stuff we’ve bought second hand…

Another auction delivery for me this week - a Chinese wooden bath. I plan to use it as a coffee table in the snug as I think the darker colours will be lovely. Half the lid lifts off which I’m also looking at as extra children’s toy storage - you can never have too much!!

Then and Now

We are really lucky to have quite a lot of photographs, drawings and paintings of the house over the years. I was very inspired by Kate’s archive adventures on her own home to start going through our local archives for more but I haven’t got round to it yet!

For starters the front of the house was much more open without the magnolia tree or hedge. However I really like these additions and don’t think they impact negatively at all on the general aspect.

You can see there used to be a glass veranda across the front of the house. Sadly it’s missing now but it explains why there’s a door in the holiday let kitchen to outside with the main exterior door only in the next room. It would have been a hive of activity with the comings and goings from the old courtyard into the house.

Something else I like seeing is the HUGE chimney stack in the centre of the house. This used to be a whole other wing of the house at the back which houses the kitchens downstairs and the playrooms and nannies upstairs. The large chimneys would have been connected to the kitchen fires and ovens and would have needed the height for the draw as the house is so close to the rock face and woodland at the back. I’m not sure when this wing was lost but there’s no sign of it now. However when we had the retaining wall fixed last year the builders found the cavity had been filled in with tiles, broken pottery and even bones which would all relate to the kitchen having been situated in the same spot.

I love studying these old pictures as I find I understand so much more about the house so can make better decisions for its future.

Anyone who knows me knows I love an auction. When I was little my grandparents used to take me and I accidentally bid on something by waving my bag of Quavers around! I’m probably about as erratic with my bidding now as I was then, but I get much better things! As soon as we bought our first house I started going to auctions and have bought a treasure trove of garden ornaments, furniture, lights and lamps over the years. The sideboard in the front room was something I saw when I went to a viewing and I thought it was beautiful but would definitely be out of my budget. I watched it when it came up and it was going for so little I thought I’d have a punt…. and I won! The auction house warned me on the day of collection, it was heavy! So I gathered up friends and family to come and help. It took 7 of us to carry it into the house, without even the marble on top!! But I think it suits the house and the room and is the prettiest children’s toy storage I’ve ever seen!

Now that I’m getting the house in order and planning out rooms and layouts I suspect there are a couple of impulse purchases that don’t fit. I don’t want to regret letting go of something that I love but I also can’t keep things for the sake of keeping them. So I’m contemplating selling them at auction. I’ve only ever bought so if anyone has any experience of selling I’d be delighted to hear about it!

Browsing the local auction again the other day and I saw some pieces I liked so am going to go to the viewing when I can - it’s a continuous cycle!! Exciting!

Working in the front room today on a project for a client means I can sit in the light and bright room and glimpse the cosy snug next door. I love the light and dark extreme between these two rooms as they both reflect the times of day we use them perfectly. Have a great Tuesday everyone!

It’s lovely to look back on how this room was at the beginning of the year in contrast to how it is now.

One of the projects in here was the bay window.
It has original panelling either side, then two blank panels. These blanks obviously had had something on them once upon a time but we didn’t know what. Someone had - very effectively - painted a panelling design on, but, with damp issues, much of it had peeled off. So I thought I’d try my hand at panelling myself and I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out. It adds another dimension to the bay window and mimics the original panelling next to it. Now that it’s painted the same colour I don’t focus on it which is perfect as I always wanted it to feel natural and like it had always been there.

The Snug

When the house was one and not split into two as it is now this room would have been an inner hallway with doors leading off each of the four walls. Now it’s the snug, with a log burner and very cozy in the winter. It faces north so is a little challenged for daylight and we only really sit in here in the evening so I embraced the darker side with the colour scheme. One day I’m going to put in a bookcase along the whole of the back wall so that it will become the library, but for now it’s a lovely place to curl up.

The Drawing Room

We are on the last few days of work in the drawing room and snug so I thought I’d give a little sneak peak at what’s been going on!

Electricians are here today, curtains going up in the snug and removals men coming tomorrow for 2 hours to lift the stupidly heavy stuff!! But I couldn’t resist sharing this beautiful wallpaper that’s on the ceiling in the bay window, bringing the outside in!

The House

A little nod to the beautiful spring day yesterday was. Today it’s raining so inside jobs and then a three year old at the dentist… wish me luck! 🍀

This is the week I’ve named Drying Week as the floors in the drawing room and snug are finished but I’m leaving them be to cure. Next week radiators are going back in, light fittings going up and hopefully a little bit of wallpaper is being added. Just waiting until I can start moving furniture it!!

I’m seeing everyone put photos of themselves on as there’s so much hacking going on so here we are - hi! I’m here, hugely uncomfortable, but here all the same!

It turns out I don’t take photographs of myself, only my family and house, so this is the only solo photo I can find without going back a few years!

The floor sanding for the drawing room and snug is starting today and I’m very excited! This is the last big job that needs to happen before we can get back in the rooms and start enjoying them!! Lights going up and radiators going in beginning of April (got to wait for the floor to cure) then furniture moved 12th April…. I’m counting down!!! 🥳

The snow was short lived - hooray! Here’s to a lovely sunny weekend everyone. Floor repairs and sanding starts next week in the drawing room and snug, then everything can get moved back in - my favourite bit!! Cannot wait to see everything come together 🥰

The Holiday Let

Work on the arbour continues today. It took me (with help from my fabulous mum!) 4 days to paint it - so many curves and edges!! Now I’m filling in the floor with gravel, hopefully just in time for the snow to come! Can’t wait to sit in it with a cup of coffee and plan the garden around it.

I was, very kindly, sent this picture recently which shows a wedding party taking place at Eller How. It’s part of a larger collection of photographs in an album belonging to the Ransome family taken between 1902-1913.

Rev. Henry Alfred Ransome was a vicar in our neighbouring village of Field Broughton during this period. Related to the novelist Arthur Ransome, the album shows the ‘pack of cousins’ later described by Ransome in his autobiography.

We had previously been told that Arthur Ransome visited Eller How but I’d never seen anything which supported the theory, so this find is very exciting! Lovely to see the house in it’s earlier days.

I set myself a yearly challenge when we bought Eller How - to make wreaths for the two doors every year. It’s not much but when life includes running three businesses, travel, children and renovations making Christmas decorations can fall to the bottom of the list. Last year, during a long 7 days with Storm Arwen, I stood on the porch making wreaths as it was just as cold inside as it was out. This year was a joy in comparison with much milder weather and hot coffee. I feel such joy every time I go in and out of the door to see something I’ve made by hand from foliage around the grounds. Challenge completed for another year!

I spent a lovely morning yesterday picking foliage from the grounds and making three wreaths - two for the holiday let and one for us. It’s my first Christmas decoration up in our house so far this year but I have promised our toddler that we’ll put the tree up after nursery today. Let the Christmas carnage begin! 🎄
