When your son is kind enough to let you take his new car for a drive and you end up on a bridge like this one……… I’m not normally the worrying kind, but when they’re replacing rotten planks and they stop to let you past, and the river seems a long way below you (because it is), it doesn’t half concentrate the mind! We survived, btw., and the car was returned unscathed

A wonderful example of the dangers of using google translate: are you tempted by the pound crappie, or do you think the swety fish might be a better choice? Not sure I could do better if asked to translate an english menu into spanish, but this was too good not to share (and the camarones con ajillo were delicious by the way)

Whilst the weather probably won’t match up to these photos, the Garden House is still a cosy place to hole up for a winter weekend. Whilst BH is almost closed because I am away, Puffin is still in residence, with her house-sitter, and is ready to welcome you. So - if you fancy a two night break (Friday and Saturday) at a special price of £140 for two, or £100 for one, then you can book on freetobook, via the BH website - or send me a message. Available from the end of November until the end of January, and excluding Christmas and New Year

Meeting the relations! has nearly as many 2cvs and 2CV vans as ! The foursome Modestine parked next to were very shiny indeed, but she didn’t let herself down too badly, and is definitely having more fun than they are. We pass through the Alpes du Sud on Monday, and have some serious cols to look forward to

Air conditioning 2CV style. My lovely Airbnb host offered me a welcome posy when I arrived yesterday, and now Modestine will smell of rosemary and lavender as we roll along, to remind us of this beautiful corner of Brittany

Modestine (& Cate and Puffin) are on the move again. This time we are taking it easy with a little Tour of the Hexagon, as France is known. We turned right at Calais, and will follow the borders of France, in an anti-clockwise direction, until we arrive back there at the beginning of October. Here we are in Audierne, Brittany, with the first thousand miles under our belts. Next up, the Atlantic coast, then the Pyrenees ’hexagone

A fresh batch of brownies, just out of the oven and ready for guests to enjoy. Considered by last night’s visitors to be “probably the best in the world”, but unplaced, again, at Cartmel Show (I’ll keep trying). Come to stay at Broughton House, and decide for yourself, as you’ll find a jar in your accommodation, along with some home baked shortbread

The lane behind Broughton House, is as quiet as this every day of the year, so if you fancy some time away from the crowds in Bowness on Windermere, we are only nine miles down the road, and two miles to the north of Cartmel too. Come and listen to the birds and enjoy the night sky in this quiet corner of the South Lakes

You’ve heard of a storm in a teacup? - well here is a Fuss in a flowerpot! She is enjoying the sunshine, in a quiet corner of the garden here at Broughton House. In the meantime, her sister, Bother, is busy indulging in a spot of birdwatching, up on the henhouse roof

Stargazing opportunities abound in the garden outside Ben’s Yurt. There is no light pollution in Field Broughton to spoil your view of the night skies, so settle down on the curvy bench from and channel your inner Patrick Moore (that dates me!!)

Happy Easter, on this beautiful sunny Good Friday. Finally, it is warm enough to sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day (or even the middle - you are on holiday, after all) At Broughton House, both Garden Houses, and the Yurt, have lovely sit-outeries, so you can relax in the sunshine, and listen to the birds singing their little socks off with happiness

Breakfast, looking out over the beautiful garden at Broughton House. The Garden House is a self catering apartment for two, but can also be booked for one, at a discounted price. Field Broughton, in the Cartmel Valley is close to Windermere, but it is quiet and peaceful, even in mid-summer. What better place to book a relaxing break, and - if you don’t want to cook - we have three Michelin starred restaurants within walking distance, as well as some cracking pubs

I know it is a long time since I wrote on here, but I need to let anyone who follows me on instagram know that my account has been stolen, and whatever emanates from it is no longer from me

So: if you get a message asking you to vote for me as an influencer (hilarious, I know!) DO NOT click on the link. I thought I was voting for a friend, didn't read what the link said, dutifully posted it on to some charmer thousands of miles away, and said goodbye to my account. It was spectacularly stupid of me, and appears to be irreversible

There is, so far as I know, no way of getting the account back from the scheming b***ard who has got his theiving mitts on it, so I will start another one and make sure to be more careful in future

In the meantime, I hope the thief enjoys my photos of sourdough loaves, and Puffin amongst the bluebells in the Cartmel Valley!!

the gorgeous new wonky gate from the talented Mr Owen Jones, swill maker extraordinaire, leads nomads to the Yurt and the Cabin, tucked away in their own (almost) secret garden. It truly is a thing of beauty and was made in the Lake District, from oak, by a real craftsman. Who wouldn't want to see what lies behind it?

Not far from Broughton House you will find this beauty. Known as the Egg Pudding Stone, in days gone by - before it was built into the wall at one of the two Four Lane Ends in the valley - it was supposed to rotate when the bells of Cartmel Priory chimed at midnight. No one ever saw it happen, but that doesn't mean it didn't........
I am looking forward to the 12th April, when I will once again be able to welcome guests old and new to the Garden Houses, and the Yurt and the Cabin. The Lake District is looking beautiful, my tulips are just coming out, and Puffin is waiting for some canine playmates to hove into view - see you soon
