Reverted back sixty years to wearing welly boots ๐Ÿ˜ณ as Iโ€™ve found theyโ€™re still the best for waterproof footwear and convenience. Back to the days of visiting Jean Paterson in the โ€˜Golden Bootโ€™ in Grantown High St.

24 hrs of contrasts. Last night a Northern Lights display with the Plough, Gemini and Mars visible in the shot. Awake this morning to thick freezing fog at -4 C down in the Strath all the way to Aviemore.
Look north and blue sky towards the Dava with distinct boundary in the sky. Then this evening a vivid red sunset through the mist to end a day of many colours .

A few have posted the sunset above Grantown on Christmas Eve but did you spot the Nacreous clouds?

Often described looking like mother of pearl colours they appear at this time of year as the sun sets low in the sky , shining through ice crystals at -78 C diffracting the light to create colours like thin layer of oil on water .

A dreich day but time for a short walk and passed the Dreggie Falls, a bit easier to see at this time of year minus the tree foliage.

The burn rises in the hill above me where itโ€™s called the Corshellach Burn (willow corrie or hollow) and changes to the Kylentra Burn through Grantown to enter the River Spey by the Bathing Pool.

Winter reflections on Loch Pityoulish near Aviemore. The serene waters belie a place of myth and legend.

It is the haunt of a water kelpie, a beautiful black stallion with a harness encrusted with precious stones, which would lure unsuspecting passers by to a watery grave in the loch.

For once they touched the bridle their hands were stuck fast preventing their escape. Except on one occasion, when a young boy the son of the local Stewart, Laird of Kincardine, drew out his dirk and cut off his fingers. His friends were not so lucky.

So if you go wild swimming in Loch Pityoulish, beware of a beautiful black horse on the shore, for all may not appear as it seems.

Nestling down in the Strath surrounded by forests, Grantown is difficult to photograph. Here are three of my favourite view points overlooking the town from Laggan Hill, Easter Dreggie, View Point Walk.
