Any businesses out there willing to help secure a tall ship booking for 2025? It was stunning to have the Galeon Adalucia moored along South Quay last year, attracting residents and visitors 🤩

Can your business help? We are looking to bring a tall ship into Great Yarmouth this year, aiming to repeat the success of the Galeon Andalucía's visit last year!

Please share or tag a business below if you think they would be interested in helping us to make this dream a reality ⚓️

Hello all and a Happy Christmas eve! 🌲🎄Now as we all know a certain gentleman in a red suit and a white beard will be taking to the skies tonight with his Reindeer, but did you know that Great Yarmouth also has it's own Father Christmas?

Cornelius Harley Christmas was born in 1790 and worked his way up from humble clerk to wealthy wine merchant and when it became time to retire he had amassed quite a fortune. Before his death in 1881 he bequeathed all this money, a sum of £15,800- £2 million in today's money to the corporation of the town to provide "coal, bread and other provisions" for the very poorest residents in the town. This money was to be provided "forever" as according to Mr Christmas wishes, and in 1880 this money helped to provide 8000 hundred weight of coal, 16000 loaves of bread, and more than £100 in money to 6000 poor families within the town.

After his death a charity was set up and continued to help out those in need during the festive period, and as recently as 1977 many residents received coal and other provisions to see them through the festive period. The "Cornelius Harley Christmas Fund" was amalgamated into different town charities in 1984, and still continues to this day to help out those in need.

From all of us here at Great Yarmouth Heritage Walks, we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year! 🎅
