As there is chatter across social media at the minute about Grim and a meeting is scheduled for Feb 12th, I thought I'd revisit my blog post about Grim with an update. For those of you that have attended my talk you will know about my theory behind the name Grim and what the name of the town really means. Have a read and be sure to read The Lay of Havelok as edited by Walter W Skeat.

Grim – the founding father of Grimsby and saviour of Havelok. What truth is there in the legendary tale of how a Danish fisherman saved the Prince of Denmark and founded an English settlement…

Leading two one hour walks as part of the Love ❤️ events - Love Grimsby and Love Cleethorpes. It’s a trip down memory lane for some as I share photos from the past and sprinkle it with anecdotes setting the scene for how the towns have grown and changed. Please do join these FREE events and share your stories too about these towns. I will share the link in my IG bio.

It was fun to have taken part in Michael McIntyre’s Tv takeover with doing a WDYTYA spoof. Though the content was not my area of expertise I spent time researching the history of left handed cutlery; estate agents in the early 1900s and steel production! It had to be convincing for Ruth to think she was related. It was a great pleasure to have been asked to take part in this.

Watch Michael McIntyre's Big Show this Saturday evening - BBC One - to find out what part I played in this WDYTYA takeover with Olly Murs.
It was certainly a fun thing to have done!

Olly Murs has left fans in stitches and disbelief with a hilarious family tree prank in a sneak peek of Michael McIntyre's Big Show.

These sketches are by Grimsby artist George Skelton. The four depict various scenes from the town.
Central Market with Marshalls Mill and Alexandra Dock in the background. (Central Market being where Tesco car park is)
Marshall’s Haven Mill alongside the Freshney (we know it as the Granary) and the bridge is where Alexandra Rd runs. The trees on the left are the site now of Freshney Place. Hollingsworth Mill stands on land at Cartergate in the location of the land next to Wilkin Chapman’s office. Bennett’s Hall and Marshall’s Mill located on Holme St - all now disappeared.

Recognise these buildings? The Ship Hotel and the Methodist Chapel on Flottergate - one of my favourite street names meaning the street of the floating debris on the flood water. Its proximity to the river often would see the floodwaters flow down the street. Houses at the top end had steps leading to their front doors.
You can read more about the history of Grimsby's streets in Grimsby Streets, published by Pen and Sword Books. You can purchase a copy from Waterstones Grimsby

Many of you may know I belong to the Friends of St Helen's, Barnoldby le Beck and assisting keeping the church open.
As part of the fundraising I have booked some academics and historians for a number of history talks starting in January with Dr Erin Bell, who will be doing a talk on the Quaker burial ground located in Barnoldby.
Followed in March by the fabulous John E Vigar who is a celebrated church historian who will explore churches in restoration, with a look at St Helen's Church.
In the summer local I will deliver a talk on the history of the village followed by a new guided walk I've written. Exploring the locality including the original village and showing some finds discovered there.
To book on all talks for St Helen's head to their TicketSource page www.ticketsource.co.uk/friends-of-st-helens-church-barnoldby

Today while taking part in the Remembrance Day parade from the the Minster to the cenotaph, we walked down Deansgate Bridge - 👀 what did I spy! But under the tarmac the original setts! It was a real wow moment and I had to walk back to get photos. Who knows when it may be seen again!
