Day 9 Sudeley castle Richard III owned it got 15 years as Duke of Gloucestershire and king. It is here that we find Eleanor Botteler who married Edward VI in secret and this was the reason that Richard declared the marriage of Edward and Cecily Neville illegal this declaring the two princes as illegitimate. Day 8 the battle of Tewkesbury re enactment. The whole town takes part with nearly all the shops in the town proudly displaying a banner of one of the men at the battle.
The abbey still does not allow weapons inside. 2000 enacyors staged the battle with a little showmanship from Margaret of Anjou. There was gunfire, mortal combat, archery volleys, all the elements of the real thing. We walked around the encampments talking to the protagonists before the fight. All in all a terrific medieval experience.

Day 7 and we are at Ludlow in the Welsh marches. The judicial capital of the marches where prince Arthur was sent to learn kingship but sadly he died aged 15. Before that Cecily Neville was here . She was left alone with her two youngest sons when her husband father and eldest son left her to the mercy if king Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou. Grafton Regis where Elizabeth Woodville was borne and secretly married Edward IV
Finally Fortheringhay where Richard III was borne and where MarybQueen of Scot’s was executed. It’s not much to look at now but in the 1550’s it was a significant place to be. The pulpit in the church was ad built for Edward VI . The church is where Cecily Neville is laid to rest.

Day 3 St Albans First battle 1455 second battle 1461. There’s not much left of the town from 1455 but we did get to hear the actual town clock tower bell that rung to announce the Yorkist were attacking the town on that fateful morning of 22 May 1455 at the first battle. A real moment of history.

Day 2 the Tower of London is steeped in the nation’s history for nearly a thousand years. This is where the bones of two young boys were found at the bottom of a staircase in 1674 are they the bones of the two princes who disappeared in 1483? We may never know.
Henry VI was found dead in the little chapel of the medieval palace. He died the very same day that Margaret of Anjou was paraded into London as captive in May 1471 after the Lancastrian defeat at the battle of Tewkesbury

In 1479. It was the second largest space in medieval England only the great hall of Westminster was bigger. We were treated to to live music , the acoustics are superb, it sent us back over 500 years when kings lived here

Day 1 the Tower of London Henry VIII was responsible for putting the domes on the white tower. Of course the tower is famous for many things, the ex*****on of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. He mysteriously of the two princes and where Henry VI was found dead . So many stories and legends here including that of the ravens, if they ever left the tower the kingdom would fall

Eltham palace where Henry grew up with his mother, grandmother and two sisters. The great hall built by Edward IV has a magnificent hammer beam roof. It’s easy to see a young Henry skipping lessons to go fishing on the moat.

Day 5 Warwick we climbed the church tower of st Mary’s church Robert Dudley is buried here with his second wife Lettice Knollys. Also in Warwick is the lord Leyster hospital endowed by Robert Dudley as a retirement home for the queens soldiers and is still used for the same purpose today. It’s been closed for 3 years undergoing renovation and adding disabled access. It’s really a splendid place to visit

Day 4 the Tudor age begins at the Battle of Bosworth. Richard III should have won the battle with his vastly superior numbers and Henry Tudor would have been a footnote on History. Instead Richard’s impetuous charge led to his downfall and imortality as the last Plantagenet king of England. The battlefield centre explores the battle and every year there is a battle re-enactment in August

Peterborough cathedral is a magnificent Norman gothic building. One of the very few abbeys that survived the Dissolution and turned into a cathedral. It is where Catherine of Aragon is laid to rest. I brought a porcelain pomegranate from the Alhambra place in Spain where she grew up and laid it on her grave.
