Thank you to everyone who stayed with us this season! We had so much fun and enjoyed meeting every one of you.

Bed & Breakfast is now finished for 2024, and we are taking a well-earned break.

However there is still a chance to enjoy our wonderful part of the country this Winter! You can now book The Lodge and The Huts on a self-catered basis with availability throughout the season.

Bed & Breakfast rooms are open for bookings from the end of March 2025.

Check out our website for more information and to book your stay - and remember, booking direct will always get you the best rates!

Our phone line will be open on a very limited basis over the Winter, so as always, the best way to get in contact is via email at [email protected] if you have any questions.

We look forward to welcoming you soon :)

Spooky Season picks from the Green Room Library 🎃

We’re getting ready for hibernation here… our last few Wall Walkers have passed through with largely lovely weather over the last couple of weeks, and we’ve been battening down the hatches ready for a Winter full of cosy afternoons curled up with a book ☕️

Here is a selection of books to welcome the autumn, and all the celebrations and festivals associated with it. At the end of the month of course, we have Hallowe’en - All Hallows Eve/ All Saints Day as it’s known in the Christian calendar, or Samhain as it was originally named by the Celtic Pagans of old. It was a time to open portals into the ‘Otherworld’ and connect with the souls of the dead.

Samhain customs included going door-to-door in costume to recite poetry or songs in exchange for food and drink (much like a Yuletide Wassail!)

I’m not sure I’ll be dressing up to read any of these to our neighbours as I’m not sure I’d be very popular but I’ve picked out a few that spoke to me from books by and

There’s also a look inside a past Autumn issue of - always a treat to dip in and out of!

⚡️ Steel Rigg ⚡️
Photos from a recent team trip out to Peel Crag, the stunning section of the Whin Sill visible at Steel Rigg. If you’ve walked the Wall you’ll recognise the distinct columns of dolerite or Whin stone, formed 300-ish million years ago by magma being pushed up through gaps in tectonic plates 🌋

But you may not know that alongside amazing walks, it’s also a great spot for climbing - if you’ve got experience and kit for trad climbing (there are no fixed anchors here), it’s packed with very easy but good quality lines that make it a great day out for groups of mixed ability. From Bridge House, Peel Crag is accessible via a 5-minute drive, then a less than 10 minute approach on foot.

Adjacent to Peel Crag, the picturesque Crag Lough offers more great routes - both these crags are best enjoyed in late afternoon/early evening when, on a good day, the rocks are bathed in golden sunlight.

Check out crag maps on for more info and other nearby climbing opportunities!
Always make sure you have the appropriate experience, training and kit for any outdoor activity.

Today we say goodbye to Woolly Wonka…
It’s been a pleasure to have Woolly as part of the Hadrian’s Wall Arts Trail from

Across the month of September he’s braved all weathers, and generated lots of curiosity from our guests, and from folk visiting the Milecastle Inn just across the road!

We wish Woolly well on the journey to Newcastle!

What do you do on a rainy day? Make chutney!

And boy does our Nick know how to do chutney - and lots of it too. Did you know that all of the chutney we use in our ham, cheese & chutney sandwiches has been handmade by Nick with our homegrown produce? It’s a great way to preserve things like courgette, rhubarb and even beans, when we get a big crop.

Did you know we have our own little Honesty Shop where you can find essentials for your hike?

It’s a simple concept – take what you need, in return for a charitable donation.

We use our honesty shop to raise funds for the North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team, one of two MR teams operating on Hadrian’s Wall. The team do vital work to protect and rescue walkers, climbers and sightseers if they encounter injury, illness or other difficulty while they are out enjoying the natural beauty of our area.

There are plenty of essentials on offer, from spare bootlaces to insect repellant – and of course, our best-selling blister plasters.
We are so grateful to our guests who give so generously – this season so far we have raised £100 for our MR team, and we’re hoping to raise even more before the season is out.

You never know when you might need to call on Mountain Rescue – a fun outdoor moment can easily turn into an emergency situation with a change of weather or an unfortunate accident. The best way to avoid a call-out is to be prepared; you can find tips on how to best prepare for your adventure at adventuresmart.uk

If you find yourself in need of Mountain Rescue, call 999 or 112, and ask for the Police, then Mountain Rescue. Do not change your position. To use the emergencySMS service: Text 999 and send ‘Police’ + details of incident + location

When you stay with us, you’re welcome to ask us any questions about the route, the weather, or your kit. We are keen walkers and sometime mountaineers, and we know our section of the Hadrian’s Wall Path really well, so we’re likely to know the answer to most queries you throw at us!

As the time for making hay rolls around once again, I wanted to share a tribute to our beautiful wildflower meadow.

It’s one of my most favourite things about living here - our field stands at about and acre and a half, but in this small space thrive countless species of wild flowers, grasses, insects, butterflies and moths, rodents, birds and snakes. Standing out here during a summer sunset is my idea of complete heaven!

The meadow has been part of English agricultural practice for over 1000 years, with Roman hay scythes being found all over Britain, and evidence of grassland management found in texts and images throughout the millennium.

Soon, our friend Tom (you can see his farm if you look out of the window in our Apollo room) will come with his tractor to mow the field and the top of our lawn. He’ll leave the grass and flowers to lie for a few days to allow them to dry a little and the seeds to bed in, then he’ll bale, wrap and take away the hay to be used for livestock feed.

We hope you agree that our field is a precious and beautiful place!

This week saw the first league game of quoits played on our newly installed pitches, complete with views of the Roman Wall!

If you didn’t know, quoits is a popular pub sport here in Northumberland. It involves throwing two heavy iron rings 10 yards into a clay pit, aiming to hit or ‘ring’ the steel pin embedded in the middle. There are now 27 teams across 3 divisions in the Allen Valley League, and we are so proud to house the Milecastle Wanderers team’s home ground here at the top of our field!

Those of you who have stayed here will know that we share a symbiotic relationship with the lovely folks at the Milecastle Inn - almost every guest who stays at Bridge House visits the pub to enjoy a delicious and hearty meal which restores them after a day of exploring!

If you stay with us on a Wednesday during the summer you might just catch us in action playing a league match! And on a Monday, we practice - so you could even have a go yourself.
