Colourful train, Athens metro
A short clip of the older part of the Athens subway system, which was introduced in 1869.
The train can perhaps also be seen as a piece of modern, mobile art.

The castle of Palamidi and sea-fort of Bourtzi, Nafplio, Greece / το κάστρο του Παλαμηδίου και το Μπούρτζι, Ναύπλιο
This clip is part of our series on both the illustrious as well as the less-well known, but still fantastic, sites and sights of Greece.
The footage actually comprises flights at two different dates; the lighting conditions during the second flight (the second part of the video) were difficult, with high contrast and illumination in the distance, yet clouds shadowing Palamidi. My apologies for the sub-standard illumination quality here.
Frankish crusaders took over Nafplio in 1212 A.D. and then sold it to Venice in 1368. The Venetians became so fond of the town that they dubbed it ‘the Naples of Romania’ (Romania referring to the eastern part of the Roman Empire). By 1460, the Ottomans had occupied the Peloponnese, which was then known as Morea. To protect the port, the Venetians built the fort of Bourtzi on the small island in the bay in 1471. The Turks literally got around this, cutting off access to the island by surrounding it with a line of large boulders in the sea so that ships could not approach the fort. After a three-day siege, Nafplio fell to the Ottomans, who ruled there until the Venetians came back and attacked with stronger forces to retake the city in 1686, making it the capital of Morea. However, the Venetian triumph was to be short-lived.
Determined to hold on to Nafplio this time, the Venetians built what they hoped was an impenetrable fortress on the high rock of Palamidi above the city. Built remarkably rapidly between 1711-1714, it was a formidable construction. Unfortunately, during the first year of its completion, the Venetians failed to provide enough soldiers to hold Palamidi. With a hint of betrayal by their commander, the Venetian troops were vastly outnumbered by the 100,000 Turks sent to defeat them. That resulted in another century of Turkish rule during which Palamidi was used as a prison, and the stone stairway leading up from the town was built.
There were said to have been one thousand steps up to Palamidi, the last of wh

The castle is on a rocky peninsula at the sheltered bay of Mezapos north of cape Cavo Grosso of Mani. Actually this is more a ruined byzantine town than a real castle. The peninsula sticks out like a frying pan (whence it gets its name, 'Tigani').
The settlement was fortified probably in the 6th century but abandoned in the 7th century.
There are signs of houses, cisterns and churches, though little above the foundation level remains apart from some of the walls on the cliffs. The impressiveness of the site has led some observers to claim it as Grande Magne. However the remains are, if anything, a site of late antiquity or early Byzantine. The the churchesb are, for example, basilicas- an architectural seldom used after the eighth century.
From a strategic and tactical perspective, the position of the fortified site is relatively easy to defend, but it cannot control the surrounding Mani region.
