I love some of the art deco buildings you can find in Cromer. In its heyday it was a popular seaside destination for the wealthy and influential. Now it's booming with artists and independent business owners. These sweet little art deco covered seats overlooking the sea now display artworks and posters.

If you want to know more about the history of Cromer I recommend Paul Dickson Tours. He has a couple in Cromer including a look at the legacy of architect George Skipper.

I'm always looking for nice cafes and restaurants to recommend to my guests. A good excuse to eat out. Buttercups Tearooms is on the old High Street in Cromer, now more of a back street. It's a quirky little place, with friendly staff and some delicious food on offer. I had an excellent lunch of curried parsnip soup and a cheese scone. A delightful spot for a cuppa.

Another nice little touch at the cottage. I've put some lavender bags in the bedroom drawers. Norfolk lavender naturally. Also great to pop under your pillow for soothing sleep.

I've seen these guys near the beach on numerous occasions but haven't sampled the horse box sauna myself. I have it on good authority though that it's a real treat. Check it out at https://www.instagram.com/thepinksauna/

Goldfinch Cottage is the perfect writer’s retreat. Set off the beaten track but just a mile from the sea, you’ll find a tranquil haven, cosy atmosphere, and delightful courtyard garden. Settle down and let your creative juices flow. There’s plenty of inspiration on the doorstep with long sandy beaches, sand dunes and salt marshes. Soak up the history and explore the WW2 defences that pepper the coastline.

I will be welcoming some writers to Goldfinch Cottage in the next couple of months. They’ll be following in the footsteps of authors and poets who either lived in Norfolk, got inspiration from the county or set their books here including:

Elly Griffiths
P D James
Anna Sewell
Arthur Ransome
John Betjeman
Arthur Conan Doyle
Philip Pullman
W G Sebald
Sarah Perry
JM Dalgliesh

I've just arrived home from a short break at Goldfinch Cottage. Combining the pleasure of relaxing, enjoying the beautiful beaches, and then cleaning and prepping for my next guests. As soon as I enter the cottage I have to flick open the guest book and I am always delighted by the comments.

"We've had a fabulous 4 nights over Christmas. Goldfinch was perfect - clean, tidy, spacious, comfy beds, lovely hot shower, well equipped kitchen, really cosy lounge. In a gorgeous setting, so peaceful and relaxing. A real bonus to hear the owl."

"Perfect! We loved our stay between Christmas and New Year. We will definitely return."

Note to self: I need a new guest book this year!

When on holiday, it's always good to try the local cuisine so here's a heads up of what to eat when you’re in Norfolk.

🍴Cromer Crab – in season from April. In May there is even a Crab and Lobster Festival in Cromer and Sheringham. Head to Rocky Bottoms for some unsurpassable seafood.

🍴Brancaster mussels – sold by fishermen and local shops.

🍴Stiffkey cockles - I haven't tried these yet but I am assured they are delicious.

🍴Samphire – in season in May. I love it boiled with melted butter.

🍴Artisan cheeses – including Binham Blue, Walsingham, Copys Cloud, Norfolk Mardler and Wells Alpine.

🍴Fish and Chips – one of the best fish and chip shops is the Kingfisher at Walcott, just an 8 minute drive from Goldfinch Cottage. Also highly recommended is Mary Janes in Cromer.

Thoughts at Happisburgh by Joan Barton

Remember the long combes tunnelling into summer
Cumulus tossed into towers and keeps above,
The trampled cliff paths sweet with gorse and bracken
Around each known, each named, particular cove,
And by this touchstone from the years of promise
Happisburgh cracks in dry impersonal pieces -
The reeds, the marram grass, a north wind whipping
The anonymous flat sea margins, the huts, some caravans,
And over it all the sky enormously drifting
In endless thin layers of cloud: undesired
Featureless landscape where the intruding figures
Loom up too large and loud.
At first when sea meant only the brown flood
Of Bristol Channel, the flats of opal mud
Whitened with dizzying gulls when neap tides came,
Rough dogs, wild tumbling boys, far bathers' cries
And sheltered ladies safe to ask the time -
Through the diminishing glass of childish eyes
The shore was all and only wind and sun
And furious scrunch of sand on wooden spades,
Around the lighthouse bunkered in the dunes
No footsteps save one's own.

Later - in a numinous hour - the lapis bay,
The scent of briar and garlic from lush inland lanes
Blown seaward, the rock pools drinking up the Atlantic sky,
The halcyon daylight sucked down into caves -
Then it was we, not I (but it was plural I),
Sharing the timeless spiral of a day
That was all of light and water, air and fire;
And far below though still on the same shore
The rest were only lilliputian men
Speaking a stranger's language yet unknown:

Learning it is the hard thing. Happisburgh is a teacher
Pounding the grammar, rewarding with a poem:
For here beyond the caravans a village grows
In farms and elms and sheep-pens and a vigilant tower
Where Happisburgh church that great ark of light
Is filled with years of prayers, of griefs and fears
And homeliness, loving memorials no less
Of Kosikot and Cartref than of these generations
Whose tombstone lockers lie awash in grass;
For this is a father's house where children come
And share their equalness: sameness not difference is the stem
For uncounted variations. And each is known by name.

One of things I love doing when I get up to the cottage is to check my guest book for comments. So far, I have read nothing negative. In fact the book is full of guests who have obviously enjoyed staying at Goldfinch and exploring the area. Have had some marvellous feedback about the comfort and attention to detail which pleases me no end, as I have tried to include everything I would want in self catering accommodation.

Walking at Wells-next-the-sea a couple of days ago I was transported back into an Elly Griffiths novel. Pinewoods, marshes, dunes and sea.

As we crept our way through the marsh to the woods beyond, I was imagining how frightening it would be to find yourself there in the dark with the tide coming in (very quickly) and not having any firm path to safety. A bad outcome would be incredibly easy.
