Labour increases price of travel permits for EU visitors by 60% 📈

Rising from £10 to £16, the hike has sparked fear that it will negatively impact the tourism industry. The permit is valid for two years and covers multiple journeys.

The Home Office said the price of a permit would rise to help “reduce the reliance of the migration and borders system on taxpayer funding”.

UK Covid takeaway habits endure as fast food calorie intake remains high. Study shows delivery apps such as Deliveroo and Just Eat still popular after pandemic boom in orders.

Analysing data on shopping habits from thousands of consumers, the thinktank said calorie consumption from takeaway food grew by more than 50% during the height of the pandemic – and had stayed high thereafter, as households continued to opt for a night in front of the TV instead of a meal at restaurant or pub.

Despite closures, restaurant growth offers some optimism to the UK hospitality industry. The latest Hospitality Market Monitor from CGA by NIQ and AlixPartners shows that:

🏢 Closures in Britain’s hospitality sector slowed from 8 sites a day in 2023 to 4 in the first quarter of 2024.
📈 The number of food-led sites grew by 0.1% in the first quarter of 2024
🍴Casual dining and independent restaurants grew by 0.5%

The hospitality industry is about to undergo significant changes, with new tipping legislation on the horizon.

From October 2024, businesses will be required to pay staff 100% of tips, with no option to withhold any amount for sundry expenses.

A recent HOSPA study found that 81% of respondents were regular tippers – and that 82% of those preferred that tips go directly to the staff serving them.

85% of hospitality professionals experience poor mental health over the past year.

From report by Planday, hospitality workers said the most common symptoms of poor mental health they experienced were...
💤 47% disturbed sleep
🕑 44% anxiety
💬 31% depression
All of which became more pronounced with irregular shift patterns or uncertain work shifts.

Over half of people admitted they were planning to leave their current job in the immediate future, with only a quarter them having access to mental health services through their job.

Many hospitality businesses are concerned as to what might happen to their ever decreasing bottom line with the National Living Wage increase looming 💬

Industry bodies for pubs, restaurants, hotels and cafes argue more businesses will be forced to close unless the chancellor takes action to mitigate surging costs - figures show that over 6,000 hospitality venues shut their doors in 2023 alone.

From 1 April a £1.02, or 9.8%, increase to the National Living Wage is due for those aged 21 and over...taking this to £11.44 per hour.

Many are calling for suggestions like VAT reduction, further energy support, capping business rates, reducing the rate of alcohol duty as just some of the ways this increase could be offset. What do you think?
