With another win for England last night ⚽ it's set that pubs and bars could achieve almost billion pound boost if the Three Lions continue their winning streak in the Euros this summer.

UKHospitality has estimated that the group stage alone will generate an additional £340m in sales for hospitality venues across the UK, rising to £800m if England win the tournament.

UK Covid takeaway habits endure as fast food calorie intake remains high. Study shows delivery apps such as Deliveroo and Just Eat still popular after pandemic boom in orders.

Analysing data on shopping habits from thousands of consumers, the thinktank said calorie consumption from takeaway food grew by more than 50% during the height of the pandemic – and had stayed high thereafter, as households continued to opt for a night in front of the TV instead of a meal at restaurant or pub.

Despite closures, restaurant growth offers some optimism to the UK hospitality industry. The latest Hospitality Market Monitor from CGA by NIQ and AlixPartners shows that:

🏢 Closures in Britain’s hospitality sector slowed from 8 sites a day in 2023 to 4 in the first quarter of 2024.
📈 The number of food-led sites grew by 0.1% in the first quarter of 2024
🍴Casual dining and independent restaurants grew by 0.5%

The hospitality industry is about to undergo significant changes, with new tipping legislation on the horizon.

From October 2024, businesses will be required to pay staff 100% of tips, with no option to withhold any amount for sundry expenses.

A recent HOSPA study found that 81% of respondents were regular tippers – and that 82% of those preferred that tips go directly to the staff serving them.

85% of hospitality professionals experience poor mental health over the past year.

From report by Planday, hospitality workers said the most common symptoms of poor mental health they experienced were...
💤 47% disturbed sleep
🕑 44% anxiety
💬 31% depression
All of which became more pronounced with irregular shift patterns or uncertain work shifts.

Over half of people admitted they were planning to leave their current job in the immediate future, with only a quarter them having access to mental health services through their job.

Many hospitality businesses are concerned as to what might happen to their ever decreasing bottom line with the National Living Wage increase looming 💬

Industry bodies for pubs, restaurants, hotels and cafes argue more businesses will be forced to close unless the chancellor takes action to mitigate surging costs - figures show that over 6,000 hospitality venues shut their doors in 2023 alone.

From 1 April a £1.02, or 9.8%, increase to the National Living Wage is due for those aged 21 and over...taking this to £11.44 per hour.

Many are calling for suggestions like VAT reduction, further energy support, capping business rates, reducing the rate of alcohol duty as just some of the ways this increase could be offset. What do you think?

As the festive period begins, the British Retail Consortium and UKHospitality have come together to ask for kindness and consideration towards people who work in retail and hospitality, as well as fellow customers this Christmas.

A recent campaign called ‘Unlocking Hospitality’ run by NFN, was designed to support prison leavers into hospitality work. The month-long campaign just came to an end and saw huge success...

👏 40 employers

The campaign is run by the New Futures Network, a specialist part of HM Prison and Probation Service, which is responsible for liaising between employers and prison leavers.

Following the success, the campaign is already in planning for next year; Friday 4 October to Friday 18 October 2024.

UK gov joins forces with industry to create next generation of hospitality leaders!💪

Jobseekers are now able to access a new Government-backed employment programme designed to fill vacancies in the hospitality sector.

The pilot scheme, set to launch in Liverpool before being rolled out to other major cities over the coming months, will upskill and match jobseekers with hospitality roles offering fast-tracked training and work experience to earn an industry recognised ‘Hospitality Skills Passport’.

Data from GfK and the Office for National Statistics show that consumer confidence is on the rise (highest since January 2022), and the UK inflation rate falling to 6.7% (August 2023), with the largest downward contributions coming from food and accommodation prices.

Last month saw the launch of the Jupiter Restaurant Scholarship, a new charitable scheme which aims to develop tomorrow’s managers and leaders of the hospitality industry 👨‍🍳🍴🍳👩‍🍳

The aim is to attract bright young people to the industry by offering a bespoke training and development programme.​ The scholarship is open to all young people from 23 years +. Deliveroo has launched a training academy, with more than 20 online courses, to offer small and medium-sized restaurants across the UK access to expert advice and training opportunities to help businesses tackle skills shortages and boost growth.
