Canada is introducing significant changes to its Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP) program, set to reduce the number of permits by over 100,000 in the next three years.

The new restrictions limit SOWPs to spouses of students in specific doctoral and master's programs, and only for courses lasting 16 months or longer. The changes are part of a broader effort to manage Canada's rising temporary resident population, which hit 2 million in 2023. These reforms also include tighter controls on study permits and work permits for spouses of skilled workers, reshaping immigration policies for international families and students.

South Africa to Revamp Visa Policies to Attract Skilled Workers and Tourists.

Oramus Travels

South Africa is set to reform its visa system to draw more skilled workers and enhance tourism, as announced by Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber. This change represents a departure from previous immigration policies that were often seen as restrictive and xenophobic.

Key Visa Reforms Ahead

The country will implement significant visa changes, including a points-based work visa, a remote work visa, and a 90-day visa exemption for travelers from India and China.

1. Points-Based Work Visa
A new points-based work visa will allow foreign professionals to reside in South Africa while working for companies abroad. This streamlined process aims to attract skilled individuals and support the economy by simplifying applications for qualified workers.

2. Remote Work Visa
The newly established "nomad visa" for remote workers has officially become law, enabling digital nomads to live and work in South Africa. This policy aligns with the rising trend of remote work and aims to invigorate the local economy.

3. 90-Day Visa Waiver for Indian and Chinese Travelers
Beginning in January 2025, visitors from India and China will enjoy a 90-day visa waiver for entry into South Africa. This initiative seeks to promote tourism by simplifying the visa process for these important markets, thereby encouraging increased travel and economic activity.

Economic Growth Through Visa Reform
The reforms are seen as vital for stimulating South Africa's economic recovery. By attracting tourists, investment, and skilled professionals, the country hopes to achieve short-term economic growth. Currently, the visa application process for foreign workers can be protracted, often taking months or years, with many denials lacking clear justification. In contrast, Western tourists face fewer obstacles, while those from major markets like China and India deal with more complicated procedures.

Tackling Visa Backlogs
South Africa has experienced considerable visa backlogs, with over 306,000 applications delayed for over a decade. Recent initiatives, including increasing staffing and extending work hours, have resolved 62% of these cases. Skills shortages pose a significant barrier to economic growth, second only to power outages.

To tackle these challenges, the government plans to digitize the visa system over the next five years, aiming to expedite processing, reduce fraud, and eliminate bias, although financial limitations may affect the timeline.

Conclusion
South Africa's planned visa reforms are designed to enhance its appeal to skilled workers and tourists, fostering economic growth and job creation. The transition to a more efficient and open visa system is expected to benefit various sectors and position the country as a more inviting destination.
