To celebrate International Women's Day I would like to tell you about the incredible Dr Laura Veale, the first female Doctor in Yorkshire.
Born just 2 years after Elizabeth Anderson (the first female doctor in the UK), Laura Veale was the daughter of the head doctor of the Swan Hotel.
Even by the time Elizabeth was into the late teens, medicine was still very much a boys game, no one in Yorshire would train her and even after gaining her qualifications in London. No one would employ her. So she opened her own general practice at 3 Victoria Avenue she became Yorkshire's first female doctor.
Throughout her career she continuously campaigned to improve medical care for women and children, including for those from more deprived parts of Yorkshire. As well as opening the towns first maternity warm at the shockingly late stage of 1935. It would appear that when it came to medicine, if it didn't apply to blokes, it didn't matter.
Dr Veale live well into her 90's continueing to engaging in charity work. She is remembered with her own plaque on Victoria avenue.

Now, confession time. I’m not actually from Yorkshire and have only lived in Harrogate for a two years! My background is in hospitality having looked after guests in both restaurants and hotels for my entire life
However, I wanted to do something that got me out and about, meeting people. Harrogate’s rich history and stunning architecture made me want to find out more about this beautiful town. After a few months of rummaging through dusty old books, I thought that other others might be interested in what I had found out. So with a little showmanship and having found a stick and ordered a sign I am delighted to host our Walking Tour of Harrogate.
Hopefully after spending an hour and a bit wandering through the winding streets, stunning gardens and learning some rather interesting facts and stories including how Bettys famous Tearooms are only here today because of a tipsy Swiss gentleman getting on the wrong train. I am hoping you will have a fun afternoon and walk away with some idea of why everyone loves this quaint little Yorkshire town as much as I do.
