Mmmm š deliciously moist and dense citrusy orange cake and moreish banana bread with peanut butter and tonka bean from Tonka, the new eatery on the Old Town seafront in Hastings. Iām going to recommend it as worth a visit to my future guests at Smugglers Cottage and Gloucester House. They also cater very well for vegans. Iām looking forward to trying their small plates menu next weekend.
Flowers have been a popular subject in art for centuries, with various meanings and symbolism attached to them. In Ancient Greek and Roman art, flowers were often used to represent gods and goddesses, while in the Renaissance period, they were often used as symbols of love and beauty. In the 17th and 18th centuries, flowers were seen as a symbol of wealth and luxury, often depicted in elaborate still-life paintings. In modern art, flowers have been used to convey various emotions and themes, from fragility and mortality to growth and renewal.
My own eco floristry display is shown alongside a large hand-coloured etching of poppies by the 20th Century Scottish artist Liz Blackadder. One of the most recurring subjects in her floral paintings was the humble poppy.
Yes, Christmas is almost upon us and on such a wild stormy and cold day Iāve decided to cheer up the house (Gloucester House) and myself with the beautiful vintage Christmas decorations. Itās worked. They look gorgeous- yes?
Itās all dressed for the lucky guests arriving for the coming weekend. We still have a couple of weekends free before Christmas.

Bathroom throwback picture to when we first acquired Smugglers Cottage on Hastings seafront. The before shows the pink and avocado bathroom we inherited (they were all the rage), but we decided to return Smugglers Cottage main bathroom back to a more authentic Georgian style (nothing wrong with pink & avocado just not here).

Here are a few Before and After shots of Gloucester House Hastings. I bought this house end of June last year and started renovations mid July. It was a struggle in many ways but so far weāve had a wonderful family Christmas here and half term with my grandchildren plus we have now just said goodbye to our first airbnb guests and Iām loving being here at every opportunity. I love this place š itās so good for the soul. Oh and weāve now got a 200 yr old olive tree on the terrace too.
Bedroom two at Gloucester House is now finished ā
except perhaps for a mirror and then the finished touches are complete. Just as well as the first booking came in today š¤© š„ itās gone from being the room we kept the door closed, to my favourite (almost). Such a beautiful and relaxing space to be in with the sandstone cliff face for a view and the hills and trees above full of birdsong.
Final touches to preparation of Gloucester House Hastings opening up to its first guests. I was very pleased with the antique French chair and love the combination of pastel blue and gold stripes with the heavy baroque - it shouldnāt work but does. What do you think?
Itās funny how just getting a coat rail correctly installed brings a level of joy š¤©. Beautiful vintage aluminium fabrication luggage rack from an old train has now been made useable by the addition of hand-made (invisible) attachments by my clever blacksmith builder Joe. I also love the fact that it perfectly matches the small oval gilt and black mirror in the hallway. Things are coming together very nicely at Gloucester House. Still waiting for our first booking- but enquiries have started. āØ

Beautiful new wool carpets finally fitted at Gloucester House on the stairs and hallway. Been a bit of a struggle but finally feeling like the house is very close to being guest ready.

Nothing spells the promise of Spring quite like the heady scent of narcissus This beautiful spring bunch held in a Belleek vase adorns the Chinese painted side table at Gloucester House. It looks like a painted scene come to life.

A grand old mahogany and brass inlay French bed with a view ... and what a view šSo happy that my beautiful bed has finally arrived and has now been put together by my lovely builder so I can at last put the blow-up bed away (from the ridiculous to the sublime in comfort and style). Another milestone crossed in the development of Gloucester House. āļø big reveal soon.

Thereās more than one way to get your vitamin C recommends the delicious homemade rose ice cream .coast in St Leonards-On-Sea. Their vegetarian tagine is also wonderful.

Just a regular night in polishing my newly acquired antique rose gold door k**b. Love the flecks of verdigris, due to the copper mixed with brass. Iām loving being in the Old Town Hastings - so many š treasures here. This was rummaged and rescued from Robertās Rummage in the High St (for less than a fiver!) and will be going on the front door at the new house. Also pleased with the spaceship/womb kitchen - itās almost done. My style appears to be ancient mariner š¢ meets future spaceship. šø
Beautiful Gloucester House is now being prepared for the big finale. Itās been a long eight weeks (it feels a longer) since renovation work started on my latest property project in Hastinga Old Town. This distressed old Victorian House by the sea is going to be spectacular- hereās a few progress shots.
