History Of Kashmiri Shawls.
History and Pedagogy of Pashimina – This is the only fabric which has gone through the tests of all time
since 300 B.C, and has received the Geographical Indication stamp (under WTO) in fabric and luxury world.
The Kashmir shawl in our collection features elongated boteh forms and is dated early 19th century. Its technique is twill tapestry, also known as kani, first half of the 19th century.
Prior to European consumption of luxury Kashmiri textiles, Kashmir shawls were popular purchases among thenobility of the Safavid, Zand, and Qajar dynasties in Iran, and the Mughal court in northern Subcontinent, Arab emperors , Russian Rulers. Since the 16th century, emperors gifted shawls to important political leaders as “robes of honor” or khel’at. They also used shawl cloth to pay allowances for their followers and to reward allies.
The last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah, in the decline of the empire, was unable to afford kashmiri textiles and instead presented British visitors with cheap pieces of fabric.
Historically there is an interesting link, when it comes to the shawls and the famed ‘ Pashmina ’, between Kashmir and Hamadan in modern-day Iran. A UNESCO report from 2014 mentions that Cashmere crafts were introduced by Sayyid Ali Hamadani who came to Ladakh, homeland of Pashmina goats. There he found that the Ladakhi Kashmiri goats produced very soft wool. He took some of this goat wool and made socks, which he presented as a gift to the ruler of Kashmir, Sultan Qutub-ud-din. Afterwards Hamadani suggested to the Sultan that they start a shawl weaving industry in Kashmir using this wool. And that is how the Pashmina shawls began!
The finest shawls of the modern era are synonymous with the name of Kashmir.
