.
“O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.
The crows above the forest call;
Tomorrow they may form and go.
O hushed October morning mild,
Begin the hours of this day slow.
Make the day seem to us less brief.
Hearts not averse to being beguiled,
Beguile us in the way you know.
Release one leaf at break of day;
At noon release another leaf;
One from our trees, one far away.
Re**rd the sun with gentle mist;
Enchant the land with amethyst.
Slow, slow!
For the grapes’ sake, if they were all,
Whose leaves already are burnt with frost,
Whose clustered fruit must else be lost—
For the grapes’ sake along the wall.”

~ Robert Frost

Amazing Tolkien themed map of Cymru!

J.R.R. Tolkien, the genius behind “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” was not only a literary mastermind but a philologist deeply connected to Cymru. His works are steeped in the influence of Welsh language, mythology, and landscapes. In his own words, he referred to Welsh as the “senior language of the men of Britain.”

Tolkien’s appreciation for the Welsh language went beyond mere admiration. He embedded Welsh linguistic elements into his fictional world. The Elvish languages of Quenya and Sindarin, which feature prominently in “The Lord of the Rings,” exhibit clear Welsh influences, both in phonetics and structure. This linguistic artistry lent authenticity to Middle-earth.

The mythological tradition of Cymru was another wellspring of inspiration. The tale of the Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh legends, offered parallels to Tolkien’s storytelling. Elements of the Mabinogion, such as the enchanted Cauldron of Rebirth, are visible in Tolkien’s works.

“Lo! a ripe sheaf of many golden days
Gleaned by the year in autumn’s harvest ways,
With here and there, blood-tinted as an ember,
Some crimson poppy of a late delight
Atoning in its splendor for the flight
Of summer blooms and joys
This is September.”

The Milford Haven Waterway — also known as ‘the hidden waterway’ — is the second deepest natural harbour in the world (after Sydney Harbour in Australia). 😲🐚

Aside from being rich in biodiversity, it has played a crucial role in the area’s historical significance — with evidence of early human settlements and maritime activity. ℹ️ 🌊

It’s also home Carew Castle and Tidal Mill – Pembrokeshire’s visitor attraction of the year and a fantastic family day out!

Garden Maintenance Day! 🌱

A lot of weeding and planting out of new flowers and bulbs … also reset the Guest Garden with more pea gravel and a better border - it’s looking great! Still plenty more room for plenty more guests😜

It’s an idea we had whilst travelling in the Caribbean a few years ago: instead of a guest book, decorate a rock to leave a legacy and make an artwork in our garden 💚 🎨 🪨

Make sure to add yours when you visit us 🤩

B A R A F U N D L E 🏖️

The Stackpole Estate has plenty of things to do, see and explore!

We’ve previously visited Bosherston Lily Ponds and Broad Haven South beach … today we parked at the lovely quaint _tiny_ harbour at Stackpole Quay, and walked over the headland to Barafundle Beach.

Named “the best beach in Wales” for its endless, deep, soft sands and its Mediterranean feel with aquamarine waters.

Dog friendly year round 🐶

One of our favourite places with its harbour and plethora of pubs … at low tide, you can walk all the way out of the harbour to a ‘secret’ beach 🏖️

On the way back, collect some fresh seafood from Something Fishy for an alfresco dinner in the garden 🦀 🦞 🦐

Followed by a quick stop at Pointz Castle Ice Cream for some delicious artisan gelato 🍧 🍨 🍦

If you’re coming/going along the M4 to/from Boyne House, we recommend a stop at The National Botanic Garden of Wales at Carmarthen.

Amazing domed glasshouse, wonderful grounds, plenty to do for the kids (they even allow dogs once a month) … and a highlight: the on-site National Bird of Prey Centre, which do a fabulous display twice a day … or you can book a private falconry experience - we learned all about, and then got to fly, a honey buzzard, a blue-winged kookaburra, a frog-mouthed tawny and a kestrel! 🦅

.
“When August days are hot an’ dry,
When burning copper is the sky,
I’d rather fish than feast or fly
In airy realms serene and high.
I’d take a suit not made for looks,
Some easily digested books,
Some flies, some lines, some bait, some hooks,
Then would I seek the bays and brooks.
I would eschew mine every task,
In Nature’s smiles my soul should bask,
And I methinks no more could ask,
Except—perhaps—one little flask.
In case of accident, you know,
Or should the wind come on to blow,
Or I be chilled or capsized, so,
A flask would be the only go.
Then could I spend a happy time,—
A bit of sport, a bit of rhyme
(A bit of lemon, or of lime,
To make my bottle’s contents prime).
When August days are hot an’ dry,
I won’t sit by an’ sigh or die,
I’ll get my bottle (on the sly)
And go ahead, and fish, and lie!”

.
“Blue July, bright July,
Month of storms and gorgeous blue;
Violet lightnings o’er thy sky,
Heavy falls of drenching dew;
Summer crown! o’er glen and glade
Shrinking hyacinths in their shade;
I welcome thee with all thy pride,
I love thee like an Eastern bride.
Though all the singing days are done
As in those climes that clasp the sun;
Though the cuckoo in his throat
Leaves to the dove his last twin note;
Come to me with thy lustrous eye,
Golden-dawning oriently,
Come with all thy shining blooms,
Thy rich red rose and rolling glooms.
Though the cuckoo doth but sing ‘cuk, cuk,’
And the dove alone doth coo;
Though the cushat spins her coo-r-roo, r-r-roo -
To the cuckoo’s halting ‘cuk.’ “
