St Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of love, often compared to St Valentine. Her feast day is celebrated on 25th January and is regarded as Wales’ version of Valentine’s Day.

Key Points About St Dwynwen:

Legend: Dwynwen was a 5th-century princess who fell in love with a man named Maelon Dafodrill. When their love could not be fulfilled, she prayed to God to help her forget him. Her prayers were answered, and she devoted her life to God, establishing a convent on Ynys Llanddwyn (Llanddwyn Island) off the coast of Anglesey.

Legacy: She became a symbol of hope for lovers, and her church ruins on Llanddwyn Island remain a popular pilgrimage site.

Tradition: On St Dwynwen’s Day, Welsh people exchange cards, flowers, and gifts as a romantic gesture.

It's a celebration of love rooted in Welsh culture and heritage.
