SEAL PUPS 🦭

🎉 As we’ve mentioned it is seal pup season around the Pembrokeshire Coast! We are lucky to have one of the largest seal pup colony’s in Southern Britain on Ramsey Island, with 894 pups being born on the island last year!

🩶 Whilst this is very exciting, it’s very important that we keep our distance from pups, as it is a very sensitive time for them and their mothers. We ask that you…

⭐️ Keep your distance & don’t touch: Although the pup may look abandoned, mum is nearby! If she feels threatened or that her pup is in trouble, she may become aggressive!
⭐️ Don’t put it back in the water: A pup that is still nursing is a poor swimmer! The thick fur coat they are born with can become heavily water logged, so leave it to mum to give out swimming lessons!

🌊 For a chance to see these gorgeous animals at a close (but safe!) distance, book now at ramseyisland.co.uk

Northern Fulmar - a nesting seabird on Ramsey Island.

The Northern Fulmar is a member of the Petrel family making it a true seabird, spending only a few months of the year on Ramsey Island raising young. Other family members include the Manx Shearwater and Albatross!

Being true seabirds, their legs are positioned quite far back on their bodies, making them incredibly efficient at taking off from the sea surface but very clumsy on land; as such, they often nest on exposed cliff faces and ledges for ease of access. This, however, does make them and their chicks susceptible to being predated on by birds of prey on Ramsey Island - peregrine falcons, ravens, greater black-backed gulls in particular.

To defend themselves, Northern fulmar are known to - quite unbelievably - projectile vomit a bright orange, oily mucus that’s very acidic. This not only deters predators, but can temporarily corrode their feathers too and make them unable to fly!

Spending much of their year out at sea, Northern fulmar also have twin nasal tubes which act as a desalination plant. These help extract the freshwater content in seawater and excrete a highly saline solution as a waste product!

See Northern Fulmar on our one hour Ramsey Island Voyage during the summer months!

🪨 Geology rocks 🪨

Ramsey Island - and much of the Pembrokeshire coastline we see today - was formed thanks to a large number of volcanic eruptions underneath the sea floor some 150 million years ago. During this volcanic period, huge amounts of sediment that had accumulated on the sea floor in the years prior were pushed upwards, distorted and skewed, by this rising magma and lava, which then all solidified into the rock we see today.

As such, Ramsey Island is divided into two distinct geological regions. The south and west of the island is relatively ‘new’ rhyolitic rock, comprised of the volcanic intrusions and ash flows that erupted underneath the sea floor and date back to ‘only’ some 150 million years ago. In contrast, the north and east is much older, comprised of metamorphic sedimentary rock layers that - when viewed today - present a timeline through the Earth’s history, with each layer representing a period in which sediment was able to accumulate on the sea floor. As such, within each of these sandstone and mudstone layers, there are marine fossils that have been identified to date the rock structures back to the Ordovician Period some 440-480 millions years ago and make it some of the oldest rocks in the country.

Want to see these rocks for yourself? Book onto our 1 hour Ramsey Island Voyage today!
