I did the fell race last year. Came last but really enjoyed myself.

Don’t mind getting snowed in either!

Hopefully your organisation is better than Ticketmasters for the real thing.

Green Dragon at Hardraw. VIP booths in their new gig barn. First gig is Friday 6th September.

Don’t worry the main pub is still the same old world pub…it’s just the unused area at the back of the pub that has been transformed into a brilliant new music venue.

Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage offers the highest rated Air bnb accommodation in The Dales and we are less than two miles walk on Pennine Way National Trail to this pub.

Here’s a link to our accommodation. We take direct bookings at a discount to Airbnb prices.

Wow. Four months running our holiday cottage.

HAVE YOU ENJOYED VISITING US, WOUlD YOU RECOMMEND US? ARE YOU BOOKED IN TO VISIT US, AND EXCITED?

A really big thankyou to our customers / guests / new friends for supporting us. Hope you all know that we genuinely love what we do and it’s a pleasure helping you plan your trips and welcoming you to the dales!

Here’s a few notes on our first summer season;

✅ Every Guest has rated us at maximum 5* air bnb rating. We love reading your reviews, they really warm our hearts. We believe all of you love the house, and a few guests have even asked if they can buy the house (it’s NOT for sale😀)!

👶 Youngest guest has been a three month old baby, and at the other end of the scale we’ve had several octogenarians celebrating parties with us.

🌎 We’ve had guests from USA, Australia, and even from Lancashire! Canadian’s arriving soon too.

👋 Everybody loves the welcome board where we chalk up your first names and say our hello’s to you.

🐶 Dog Friendly self catering accommodation IN UK About 25% of visitors bring a dog. The dog station is really popular too. We thought we’d have a higher percentage of visitors with dogs given how dog welcoming the town is?

🍺 🔥 Most popular eateries / pubs for our visitors are The George Inn at Hubberholme, Green Dragon at Hardraw. The White Hart Inn, Hawes, and the locals local The Fountain Hotel

🧀 Most of you have walked the 600m or so to enjoy the cheese tasting room at Wensleydale Creamery

📖 We’ve just started offering a welcome gift of our local detective murder mystery novel series set in Hawes. The Official DCI Harry Grimm Reader Group. Do you like this idea?

🐑 🐕 Many of you have enjoyed @ Richard Fawcett’s Sheepdog Trial demonstration on Thursday evenings.

💦 Whats your favourite waterfall? Ours is Hardraw Force but we also love the middle of Hawes fall and the series of falls at Gayle.

🚴🏻 🏃‍♀️ 🥾 Yorkshire 3 Peaks love the cottage as a walking base, and we’ve had a lot of runners including Montane Spine Race entrants. As yet no cyclists despite the annex being a great bike store and the Dales being pretty much the best cycling area in the country.

🚁 Believe it or not we’ve had repeat guests come by helicopter. Ok they are a helicopter lift service working in the area but it’s a lovely anecdote.

🔥 Have you lit the log burner fire at the property? For us that was the cherry on the cake in buying the house as it really warms and lights the living room. Roll on winter nights when we can light it earlier in the day.

What comes next. We’re already planning little improvements. Seating out the front, more coat hooks in the hall, free postcards, winter maintenance, Hawes coffee blend rather than wine in our welcome pack, and probably EV charging for 2025. What would you like us to focus on please?

Our regards and thanks to all, from happy hosts who really love what we do.

Did we say CHEESE FESTIVAL….not any old festival….It’s The Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival.

11-14th October….and we’re still available to book for accommodation that weekend in Hawes the home of Wensleydale Cheese.

The Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival is returning this October 11-14th, showcasing local produce in our region. 🧀

We have lots to offer at our Visitor Centre including our Cheese Experience where you can watch one of our team craft a Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese in our Demonstration Room. Try our Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival specials in our Calvert's Restaurant and 1897 Coffee Shop. To finish, why not explore the Cheese and Gift Shop before you leave.

This will be the gig room at Green Dragon at Hardraw. complete with stage and bar and capacity of 150-200 people. V similar to what they have at the sister pub The Tan Hill Inn.

The plan is to have ticketed gigs every Friday….imagine weekends in Hawes…gig Friday, all weekend to explore the area.

We’re excited, first concert is Friday 6th September.

We’ve cheered the new owners of The Green Dragon since they took over early this year. Huge investment going into bedrooms, kitchen and food offer, and now the gig room….all whilst keeping the traditional pub special and largely unchanged as per the last 800 years.

Simply put we love this pub. We of course offer the highest rated Airbnb accommodation in Wensleydale (22 reviews all 5*) so if you’re looking for a Hawes / Hardraw / Wensleydale visit it makes sense to follow us and get in touch.

Andrew just sent this photo of the just-polished-floor in the 'Dragon's Hall/Lair/Den' ... Whilst the stage is cluttered, and we've got some finishing things, lighting, etc, to .... finish, I thought you'd enjoy a view of a shiny floor as much as I just did! :D

CONGRATULATIONS to our housekeeper Joanne who won four first place prizes, two second and a third prize for various entries in Askrigg Show.

A woman of many talents. Cake maker, flower arranger, lemon curd maker, tart maker, potter etc etc. she also gives a lot of time to running Hawes Youth Club.

A brilliant person we are proud to have as our friend and alongside us running Heart Of Hawes Holiday Cottage.

Wonder what happened to Hawes Ropemakers. Well a newco started with former Hawes Ropemakers staff and it’s a very small business but is successfully keeping the almost lost art on British rope making going from Askrigg. Want a new dog lead, banister ropes etc, get in touch with them.

The Farmers Arms at Muker is now owned by the community. We’re pleased to have taken a small shareholding to play our part in preserving one of key parts of Muker life.

Who are these incredible people? They're often invisible but their work is obvious. They're unpaid but generate huge amounts of cash. Many seem to have superhuman levels of skills & expertise, and yet they all say they're just 'normal'. They may sound like magic elves from a fairy story but are actually volunteers in the Yorkshire Dales. If you go to an event this weekend, chances are that it will rely on an army of volunteers to happen.

Without them, so many aspects of rural life would collapse. They're the glue that hold together communities. It's thanks to so many willing volunteers that we have such great events, rich wildlife, and community services.

Here are just some examples of things volunteers do in the Dales. If you know of more or want to praise a particular volunteer, please add them in the comments.

They bake and run endless cake stalls, raising money for local charities whether it's for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, cubs, brownies, schools, church roofs, village halls...
They run essential mountain and cave services such as Cave Rescue Organisation and Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team, rescuing walkers, cavers and others when lost, hurt or stranded in the Dales.
They are the staff in countless libraries, information offices, and community hubs across the Dales. Organisations like Visit Sedbergh, Visit Settle, Visit Masham inform and welcome visitors.
They create and work in gardens, visitor attractions and in public spaces to keep everywhere looking good.
They clean, open and close churches and public buildings each day. They ring the church bells and welcome visitors.
They run important services such as the Little White Bus
They create and run events like Wensleydale Agricultural Show, Reeth Show, Malham Show, showcasing a wide range of talents and interests, bringing people together for enjoyment and entertainment.
They work with rangers and wildlife charities to look after our environment, help children to develop their interest in nature and showcase beautiful and important areas to visitors.

Thanks to everyone who contributes so much to our life in the Yorkshire Dales.

We’re enjoying a summer break in our Heart Of Hawes Holiday Cottage. A mix of doing jobs and enjoying ourselves.

So far this week we’ve done the following maintenance;

* deep scrub / bleach of the front paving slabs
* an afternoons gardening in the rear garden
* Taken a 1 Tonne log delivery and moved it / stacked it. Tidied the shed etc.
* Checked the tumble dryer / deep cleaned it.
* made up welcome cleaning packs and brought in general supplies.
* put up a few information frames on the wall to help you when here.

And still a few more things to do tomorrow.

We’re having fun though;

* Our housekeeper runs Hawes Youth Club and we’ve been painting stones in favourite book themes. I’m a rubbish artist and my Baa Baa Black Sheep won’t win any prizes!

* Completed Hawes book trail (on till early September).

* Had a lovely circular walk from Thwaite to Muker and back.

* And celebrated my father’s 80th birthday in The White Hart.

* Played jigsaws and games by the fire.

* Enjoyed Wednesday evening acoustic music night in The Green Dragon

* Hosted our housekeepers Joanne and Chris as friends and to say thankyou for all they do.

* Might have enjoyed a cheeky fish and chip dinner tonight.

No need to rush about, just enjoying everything about Hawes.

If you fancy exploring some hidden corners of Swaledale at a slightly more gentle pace, why not try one of our guided walks?

The next one is on Sunday 22nd September and we'll be heading up from Surrender Bridge to explore the incredible Blakethwaite Dams.

This walk is open to all adults and is approximately 10 miles in distance. There is the option of bagging a trig on the route too.
