A valentines message to all our guests.

Thankyou for trusting us with your holiday arrangements, we love running Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage and it’s a real pleasure hosting you all.

Here’s a few photos of the house dressed for valentines today. Our housekeeper Joanne gets really excited about presenting the house for special occassions, and we love her for it. She’s very much our valentine today ♥️ 💐

This post from Yorkshire Treasures relates to how supporting local shops supports our dales economy.

Every single shop in Hawes is family owned and independent. Many have run for generations such as J.W Cockett and Son and Elijah Allen & Son, but equally we have some great newer businesses in the town. Isn’t it lovely coming to a place that isn’t flooded with multinational chains and their bland fits all offer.

Where does your money go? Is one £10 more valuable than another? Depends where you spend it! I remember going to our local shop when I was about 15. There was always a queue, in part thanks to the sign on the counter: 'local news desk'. It was tongue-in-cheek but also true. Almost every one stopped to talk, ask about families and exchange news. At 15 I was impatient, anxious to be on my way and out into the world so I found it really frustrating, but it was that sense of community that brought me home again. There's real heart in every local business.

There's a big difference between shopping in independent businesses in rural areas, and in large shops in bigger towns. When you walk into a shop, gallery, cafe, pub or any other small business here, you're likely to be greeted by the owner, a member of their family or someone who lives locally and has worked there for a while.

There's a sense of welcome and connection. It doesn't take long before they remember you and what you like. There's banter in the butchers, the wine shop owner who always remembers your favourite wine even when you don't (thanks Corks and Cases!), the gallery owner who can second-guess not only your preferences but those of the friends you've bought for in the past (Masham Gallery!)

Shopping can take a bit longer here, as you go from shop to shop in search of each of their specialities. But that's a good thing. Slowing down can do us all good, and the conversations along the way are uplifting and satisfying.

You're not just spending money in a shop - you're investing in a sense of community. It might be easy for me to drive to the nearest supermarket but they won't remember me next week, nor will they gather up produce and take it out to the person on a mobility scooter outside, checking that they're well. Shops here perform a service beyond their basic sales.

Spend a little while in Settle, Skipton, Masham, Richmond, Leyburn, Hawes, Reeth, Ingleton, Pateley Bridge, Sedbergh or one of the other Dales market towns, and your money really does go further!

Research found that when you shop locally, for every £10 you spend, about £50 is generated in the local economy through the multiplier effect. You spend £10 in the grocers, and then they go and buy a paper from the newsagents, who pays a local window-cleaner for their services, who can then afford dance lessons for their children in the village hall, and so it goes on...

We love that this brilliant independent business is offering all sorts of fun workshops / creative skills right here in Hawes.

. This is the incredible 2025 programme for the Swaledale Festival. As good a time as any to book a holiday at Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage.

So much walking, music, culture and comedy going on over the last week of May and first week of June. The fields should be full of yellow hues as the wildflowers reach full bloom.

Heads up that the wonderful Swaledale Festival is announcing its 2025 programme tomorrow.

The festival runs from the 24th May to the 7th June, and events are held across Swaledale, Wensleydale, and Arkengarthdake. Many are in and around Hawes.

About Swaledale Festival
Swaledale Festival is an annual festival of music and arts based in the three most northerly Yorkshire Dales - Swaledale, Wensleydale and Arkengarthdale - a large rural area of outstanding beauty. Founded in 1972, the Festival begins on the Saturday of the late May Spring Bank Holiday each year and runs for two weeks. Festival venues range from tiny chapels seating fewer than fifty people to halls seating several hundred. Many are charming village churches but there are also heritage sites such as Richmond's Georgian Theatre Royal and Gayle Mill near Hawes. We have recently added Tennants Garden Rooms in Leyburn as a Festival venue - our largest at 600 seats.

The programme includes a core of classical music concerts as well as folk, brass bands, jazz and world music. In addition there is poetry, film, dance, drama, comedy, workshops, masterclasses, exhibitions, children's events, talks and themed guided walks. There are usually a few surprises too (think steam train trips, bat watches, archaeology projects and astronomy sessions!). There is a focus on the extraordinary landscape, the history, the legends and the characters of the northern Dales.

Dark Skies Festival; an excuse for a short break in the Yorkshire Dales National Park with Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage?

Some wonderful things being provided from planet walking trails, to Malham by moonlight, and a lot of stargazing. The main festival is the 14th February to 1st March but some events precede or extend beyond the core festival.

March is lambing time around

It’s a lovely time to visit, new life, lambs taking their first steps, then bleating and gambolling playfully. It’s a sign the farming cycle is starting again and the worst winter weather should have passed.

At Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage we offer short or longer breaks, a chance for families young and old to breathe some air and take in spring in the Yorkshire Dales National Park

We can help you find walks that fit your families mobility,and you’re sure to see lambs everywhere at this time of year. You may even be lucky enough to see them being born.

Lambing is mainly from the end of the first week of March into the first week of April.

Why not plan a visit to Hawes? We’ve great hospitality in the area, real fires in the pubs, the best fish and chip shop in the country, waterfalls, countryside galore, lots of independent shops, Wensleydale Creamery, Dales Countryside Museum and much much more. Acoustic music , galleries, cave visits, alpaca walking, road cycling and mountain biking, wild swimming….there’s so much to do!

Montane Spine Race….entries open…will sell out just like that.

Any serious runners out there want to use Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage as a race or training base?

We are runners ourselves (not Spine level!) and love helping our guests enjoy The Dales.

NB we’ve a cracking Little White Bus service so that opens up linear training runs to/ from the cottage with the bus service covering the other journey.
