. This is the incredible 2025 programme for the Swaledale Festival. As good a time as any to book a holiday at Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage.

So much walking, music, culture and comedy going on over the last week of May and first week of June. The fields should be full of yellow hues as the wildflowers reach full bloom.

Heads up that the wonderful Swaledale Festival is announcing its 2025 programme tomorrow.

The festival runs from the 24th May to the 7th June, and events are held across Swaledale, Wensleydale, and Arkengarthdake. Many are in and around Hawes.

About Swaledale Festival
Swaledale Festival is an annual festival of music and arts based in the three most northerly Yorkshire Dales - Swaledale, Wensleydale and Arkengarthdale - a large rural area of outstanding beauty. Founded in 1972, the Festival begins on the Saturday of the late May Spring Bank Holiday each year and runs for two weeks. Festival venues range from tiny chapels seating fewer than fifty people to halls seating several hundred. Many are charming village churches but there are also heritage sites such as Richmond's Georgian Theatre Royal and Gayle Mill near Hawes. We have recently added Tennants Garden Rooms in Leyburn as a Festival venue - our largest at 600 seats.

The programme includes a core of classical music concerts as well as folk, brass bands, jazz and world music. In addition there is poetry, film, dance, drama, comedy, workshops, masterclasses, exhibitions, children's events, talks and themed guided walks. There are usually a few surprises too (think steam train trips, bat watches, archaeology projects and astronomy sessions!). There is a focus on the extraordinary landscape, the history, the legends and the characters of the northern Dales.

Dark Skies Festival; an excuse for a short break in the Yorkshire Dales National Park with Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage?

Some wonderful things being provided from planet walking trails, to Malham by moonlight, and a lot of stargazing. The main festival is the 14th February to 1st March but some events precede or extend beyond the core festival.

March is lambing time around

It’s a lovely time to visit, new life, lambs taking their first steps, then bleating and gambolling playfully. It’s a sign the farming cycle is starting again and the worst winter weather should have passed.

At Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage we offer short or longer breaks, a chance for families young and old to breathe some air and take in spring in the Yorkshire Dales National Park

We can help you find walks that fit your families mobility,and you’re sure to see lambs everywhere at this time of year. You may even be lucky enough to see them being born.

Lambing is mainly from the end of the first week of March into the first week of April.

Why not plan a visit to Hawes? We’ve great hospitality in the area, real fires in the pubs, the best fish and chip shop in the country, waterfalls, countryside galore, lots of independent shops, Wensleydale Creamery, Dales Countryside Museum and much much more. Montane Spine Race….entries open…will sell out just like that.

Any serious runners out there want to use Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage as a race or training base?

We are runners ourselves (not Spine level!) and love helping our guests enjoy The Dales.

NB we’ve a cracking Little White Bus service so that opens up linear training runs to/ from the cottage with the bus service covering the other journey.

🏃‍♀️ 🏃‍♂️ 🏃 to our running friends….the hardest running race in Britain came through Hawes yesterday….see the video….latter part features Hawes.

We’re a great place for easy trail running, high levels mountain / hill running, racing, training, purely leisurely running in some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain.

The best of a week at Heart of Hawes Holiday Cottage with friends;

Sunday ❄️ ❄️ ❄️

Early morning walk round Hawes and Gayle photographing the town in the snow. 🎥 🚛 Took a video of a gritting lorry up Gayle Lane which has gone viral…500,000 views so far. How weird? Then a lunchtime walk to the 800 year old Green Dragon at Hardraw. Sunday lunch by the fire, few drinks, played dominoes. ❄️ ⛄️ 🥾 🔥 🍺 🥘 . Think most of you know it’s one of our favourite walks / pubs, every time we visit it feels like we are entering a different world.

Monday🌞 and laying snow.

⛪️ 🍺 🕯️ 🎤 🥘 We had been due to attend the annual meeting of ‘The Hubberholme Parliament and the candle / land auction at The George Inn at Hubberholme’ which includes church service, meal, quiz and singalong whilst auctioning common land for the year ahead. Sadly it was postponed due to the weather.

Plan B was breakfast at Wensleydale Pantry, then we drove out to Ribblehead Viaduct and had a lovely lunch by the fire at The Station Inn at Ribblehead Viaduct, and a walk by the viaduct in great sun / light after.

Tuesday🌞 and laying snow.

The Dales copes with the snow well. The weekly auction at Hawes Farmers Auction Mart went ahead and we popped in for a greasy spoon breakfast and to watch the sheep sales. 🥘 ☕️ 🐑 🚜.

Then all us 50+ year olds went sledging at ‘The Yorkshire Alps’ at Hardraw. Great fun including a few spills as the frosted snow was making the slope run very fast.

We visited Hardraw Force, and saw Englands highest drop waterfall in all its majesty in the snow and sun. Not much of a flow rate, but looking beautiful all the same.

We tried The Three Horseshoes at Wensley for lunch then visited Bolton Castle to see the wild boar in the snow (The Castle is shut until Spring), followed by stopping to see Aysgarth Falls, Yorkshire Dales in the snow and coffee and a cake at Mill Race Teashop by The Falls.

We drove up the Buttertubs Pass which had just reopened to see the snow but the consensus was not to descend into Swaledale, so instead we called in on the way home for a quick drink at The Green Dragon (second visit of the week!).

Wednesday 🌞 and laying snow

Our friends went home this morning. Jo and I walked across pretty much virginal snow to Burtersett, then came back at a slightly higher level across Shaw Lane before descending into Gayle. This is one of our favourite walks.

Lunch at Wensleydale Creamery (they have a deal on!) and the cheese tasting room which we always love.

In the evening we had our third visit of the week to The Green Dragon for acoustic music night 🎸 🎶 🔥 🍻 by the fire with our friends Chris and Joanne. We stayed to the close with us all singing along. The car temperature gauge read minus 9 degrees centigrade driving home! In the summer we walk home but not today!

Thursday🌞 and laying snow

A day of work for my parents who are downsizing and I spent the day hiring a van and moving stuff into storage.

Friday. 🌞 and laying snow.

More work filling and priming the architraves / frames of the two new doors we’ve fitted downstairs, but we did make it over into Swaledale. A great good value lunch at the Farmers Arms Pub, Muker which we recommend (we declare we own a nominal share in this community owned pub).

We then drove down Swaledale to Richmond to buy a few bits and bobs for the cottage and to visit the veritable treasure trove of bargains that is Yorkshire Trading Company (Jo filled her basket with cheap Jigsaws).

I had a few drinks / catch up with a neighbour at The White Hart Inn, Hawes, and then we relaxed in front of our fire to toast the last night of the holiday

Saturday ☀️sun and laying snow

We saved the best till last. We got to see Hardraw Force frozen with the ice cauldron at the bottom and stalagtites all around the cliffs. This only happens very occasionally and this time we saw it in bright skies with snow around it. Perfect…I’m still smiling now.
