Calling All History Enthusiasts:
The Border Reiver Trail 60 Extraordinary!

The story of the Border Reivers in the Scottish Borderlands is not as well-known as it should be. Our plan is to further tell the stories of the Esk, Ewes, Teviot and Liddel valleys.

Visitors who marvel at the restored Gilnockie Tower are sad to see that the original Reiver Trail, set up by Fiona Armstrong of Byreburnfoot and the Clan Armstrong Trust in the early 1990s, is being rather neglected. We aim to change that…

The Reiver Trail weaves through the debateable lands. It traces 60 miles of historic sites, all steeped in tales of conflict and romance. Our plans include installing new information boards and developing a new website. We will digitise the Armstrong Clan archive and do archaeological digs.

The original trail was born from the passion of Armstrong volunteers who came together to create a route that honours not just this notorious clan, but other Border Reiving families, too. We want to expand it and craft an unforgettable visitor experience that transports people to the places their ancestors lived, fought, and thrived.

We’ve done the research. We’ve laid a solid foundation. But to bring this vision to life, we need more hands on-deck. Hence, we’re reaching out to organisations, history buffs, and anyone with a passion for preserving our shared heritage.

Our Vision for the Future:

Expansion: Encompassing eight historic sites across the Esk, Teviot, Teviot and Liddel Valleys, the trail could grow to include 20 extra locations, each rich with history. This will enhance the visitor experience, offering a deeper dive into fascinating stories. A new website is key to showcasing an expanded trail and guiding visitors on a journey through time. Five of the original Reiver Trail sites are at this moment going through reconstruction.

Archiving: Gilnockie Tower holds a treasure trove of paper archives from Clan Armstrong. Our goal is to digitise these documents and make them accessible to those eager to explore ancestral roots. The volume of material is vast, and we’re already seeking someone to help with this crucial task.

Archaeological Digs: We’re in talks to start archaeological digs around Gilnockie Tower, with hopes of uncovering long-buried history. If successful, the plan is to extend this to other sites along the Border Reiver Trail, unearthing artifacts that have been hidden for centuries.

👏👏👏👏 Tweed Valley Blogger - TVB Tours . There is so much to see and enjoy in the South of Scotland, Edinburgh Festival is magical but can be soo busy. Especially on days like this, visitors love to enjoy the Mill and Whisky Distillery tours (both indoors) and are mesmerized at the wonderful skills and craftmanship of the textile and manufacturing industries, not to mention the quality and shopping on offer. And then there is the scenery, history, stories and space to explore and enjoy.

August is festival month in Edinburgh, here are my recommendations for escapes in The Borders for when the Capital Culture just gets bit too much!
