Will the online safety bill make the Internet a safer place for all of us and provide additional protection for our children online. Read the Tamite blog for our view

The Online Safety Act (OSA) was passed in October 2023 as a bill aims to make the Internet safe for all of us, especially our children.

When they are trawling for content, young people (actually, not just young people) lack a sense of “why this stuff” is being served up to them.
This is a problem I honestly can’t relate to, as the Internet wasn’t a thing when I was a kid, and CBBC and Teletext were hardly challenging technology environments.

So I’m very much pro-regulation of the Internet, especially where children are concerned; even the “Wild West” finally got regulation, but not before a lot of people ended up shot.

This week, I had the opportunity to see firsthand just how frustrating it is to deal with an account hijack.
The customer contacted me, as one of the retired partners had unfortunately been victim to a hijacked personal email account.

The hijacking was discovered when spam was sent from the compromised account, some of which was directed toward the retired partner’s old company.

It wasn't difficult to work out how the account had been compromised the passwords were too simple and anyway we shouldn't just rely on passwords to protect our data.

Stolen passwords are the most common cause of account compromise. Compromised accounts are often used in phishing campaigns and to send spam.

how good is my password, in most cases not good enough. Account hijacking is on the rise and can cause you and your business serious issues.

I believe the next few years in IT will be incredibly exciting as AI will be truly transformative for many of the tools we currently use to run our businesses.

The best advice for anyone looking to succeed and progress, whether in your personal career or business, is to look at how artificial intelligence will affect what and how you go about your activities, understand it, and embrace it.
As technology develops, the danger to jobs and companies will come from the fact that people who resist and don’t learn to work with AI won’t be as efficient as their colleagues who have. Companies that don’t embrace artificial intelligence won’t be as competitive as those that understand how to use AI, train their employees in how to use it, and plan to fully embrace a future where AI will assist in most facets of the business.
Having an AI colleague and assistant will greatly benefit many of us who currently feel we are struggling with information overload.

Hovhannes Avoyan, founder of picture and video editing app Picsart, shares his advice for our CEO Secrets series.

One of the problems that Social Media providers will have as the use of AI for producing content becomes more prevalent is the question of trust. If the platforms are unable to distinguish between and alert us to content created by AI, they will have significant issues of credibility; legitimate users who aren't trying to dupe us should have no problems with admitting the contribution AI has made, such as co-authoring and the makers of the tools will need to add watermarks.
We can look forward to our existing tools being updated to detect AI content and new entrants to the market aimed at detecting the illicit content produced to mislead us. In the meantime, it's a good idea for all of us to keep abreast of developments in AI, good and bad, as it will happen anyway.

The tech will detect images - but not video or audio - made by other companies' AI generators.

I love this BBC article. One of the most exciting aspects of AI will be when assistants can go beyond fetching and carrying data and actually respond emotionally.
I'm sure most of us have seen the incredible work organisations like Age UK do for our community.
In many cases, older people in this country are lonely. I visit an older friend a couple of times a week and phone when I can, but when we visit them, it just brings home the fact that a couple of fleeting conversations don’t even begin to cover it.. of course, if they are mobile, they can go to a regular coffee morning. But what many isolated people crave is a companion.
An AI companion who acts with empathy engages in conversations and acts as a trusted friend could benefit many people in our community.

Artificial intelligence will revolutionise our work and leisure, so we must embrace it now. However, the hype currently outweighs the achievements, but don’t be fooled into thinking it’s a fad.
In five years, it will be like the Internet; we will all wonder how we managed before it arrived.
If you want to get started with AI, look at our blog on how to get the most from Microsoft Copilot and Google Bard by understanding how to frame your questions.

One of the possibilities offered by integrating AI into our businesses is the ability to create high-quality and compelling proposals, blogs, and presentations quickly and accurately.
We are already experiencing high levels of interest from my customers; they see that in a challenging economic environment, their businesses need to improve their interactions with clients, and they perceive the advantages that AI products like Chatbots and Microsoft Copilot can bring.
Essentially, AI assistants have possibilities beyond creating proposals. They can assist with creating financial analyses, researching new products, and assessing competitors.
We will face many issues with AI’s ability to imitate and fake; legislation can help, and legitimate tools used to create images and video content can be put in tags and digitally watermarked so that we know what we see is digitally enhanced or created.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-68215619
New tools will need to be developed and existing ones augmented to be able to spot this kind of deceptions, and we are probably already seeing them in Phishing emails; AI defences are already being added to security products such as web and email filtering and will help here as well.
Take a look at our latest blog to see how we are helping our customers benefit from AI.

There is a widespread conception that AI will be bad news for many job functions; like me, the Bank of England Governor doesn't hold this view. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-68170068
Technology within our businesses, the Internet, Email, social media, even Microsoft Teams and the incredible amount of data created by our applications have resulted in many users suffering from information overload. The reason is apparent: we humans are not built to deal with multiple simultaneous lines of communication, and we very quickly fall into a state of information fatigue.
The computer as a mass processing tool used for work and pleasure would not have taken off if we had all had to learn code to work it; the addition of the Windows Graphical interface, which allowed us to use a mouse to select an application, made computing usable to almost anyone.
Artificial Intelligence and products like Microsoft Copilot are the next logical step; they are an interface between computing and the Internet, and they will help us filter out the noise and work much more effectively; the biggest risk is that they may bring some enjoyment and creativity back into the working day. See how we are helping our customers use AI to work more effectively and give their customers a better service. https://tamitesecureit.com/how-to-use-microsoft-365-copilot-to-automate-email-responses/

I firmly believe businesses can benefit from their technological investments by adopting AI, specifically Microsoft Copilot.
According to Bill Gates, businesses that embrace AI will succeed in the future, and that doesn't just apply to big businesses. If anything, I believe smaller, more agile companies will benefit even more than larger ones. This is because bigger firms have bigger workforces and more complex infrastructures with more built-in inertia.
SMEs are ideally placed to leverage the extra productivity and time efficiencies, freeing employees from routine and repetitive work and giving them time for creativity.
Which is what computer technology and AI should be all about.
Employees and employers need not be concerned about the changes AI will bring to the workplace, as having a personal assistant on every desktop will enhance productivity and improve security by reducing digital overload.

The Email ecosystem is having something of an upgrade in February; the reason for the upgrade is simple and compelling. The fact is that it is too easy to spoof or fake email addresses.
One way to forge an email is to make it look like it came from you, me, or anyone else you can think of. This is how criminals fool us into doing things that compromise our security, by pretending to be legitimate and trusted sources of email that often come from hacked email accounts.
This kind of attack is called Business Email Compromise (BEC). Your company is in danger from fake emails. BEC causes 60% of fraud because if I can send you an email that seems like it came from someone inside your company or someone you trust, you are more likely to follow it.
To prevent account takeovers, we can make our accounts more secure with stronger passwords, two-factor authentication, and other measures.
The next thing we can do is make it harder for others to fake our emails. This is why Google, Yahoo and many big companies are making changes in February that will require DMARC for sending emails, which will first affect large senders, but eventually, everyone.
For more information on how you can make your organisation DMARC compliant or to find out your status see our latest blog https://tamitesecureit.com/introducing-the-valimail-dmarc-report-analyzer-service/

You may have noticed Microsoft is big into AI adding its Copilot assistant to Bing, Windows 11 with an upgrade to Windows 10 coming soon and of course the M365 suite.
The latest example announced this week is a new key that will be added to its keyboard; the first new addition in 30 years, the AI Key, will give users access to Copilot, the Microsoft AI assistant.
The addition of the Microsoft new AI key underlines the importance that Microsoft is placing on the development of its AI tools;
Read our blog to find out more about the AI key https://tamitesecureit.com/microsoft-ai-example/
Microsoft is, in effect, posting notice of an intent to be at the forefront of the generative AI revolution.
Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant that helps you work smarter and faster using the power of Artificial Intelligence; if you are not among the 100 million people who have already set up an account, it’s time to get with the program.
Did you know that it took the Internet 7 years to achieve 100M users Chat GPT reached that figure in 3 months.

An example of Microsoft's enthusiasm for AI, the Microsoft AI key underlines the importance that Microsoft is placing on AI tools.

By now, you may have experimented with chatbots like Bing Chat or Google Bard, and you might be contemplating the ways in which the new generation of AI assistants could enhance the productivity of yourself and your colleagues.
Copilot is Microsoft's big AI idea to give every individual a virtual personal assistant to enhance productivity by creating more quickly, creatively, and accurately while working within the Microsoft Application Suite. (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc). Part of Microsoft's pitch is also to alleviate the burden of information overload that we all struggle with occasionally.
One of the ways we can make ourselves and colleagues Copilot fit and ready for when we have access to what is undoubtedly the next big thing is learning how we can get the most from it.
Getting used to framing your query to Bing chat (assuming, like most of the world, you aren’t lucky enough to have access to Microsoft’s M365 Copilot); in the meantime, get a feel for the ways you can use AI to help with your daily tasks, you’ll soon see why when it’s embedded into your apps it will be a massive boon to your productivity, especially for SME’s.

As the festive season approaches, we’re all on high alert for the unwelcome gift of spam emails, social media scams, and romance fraud. Cybercriminals are ramping up their efforts to exploit the holiday cheer. But fear not; the AI revolution in cybersecurity products is our shining star, offering enhanced detection capabilities to shield us from these digital grinches.

This week, digital giants Amazon and Google pledged action on fraud;

We believe this and other moves by the industry (see yesterday’s blog on the Yahoo and Google DMARC updates) are necessary steps forward; however, continually improving our defences is our focus and the approach we advocate to our customers. We highlight the AI revolution in cybersecurity product today's blog https://tamitesecureit.com/stopping-spam-emails/

The Email spam rules for Google and Yahoo are being updated and considerably tightened in February 2024 for most businesses; this will mean getting your IT or Webhost to do an SPF, DKIM and DMARC check.

According to the announcement from this February, Google and Yahoo will begin enforcing new requirements for bulk email senders. The guidelines primarily focus on the authentication of outgoing emails, reported spam rates, and the ability to unsubscribe from email lists easily.

Interestingly, we have noticed that other providers and organisations have tightened their criteria over the last six months, even for organisations that don't meet the bulk sender criteria, resulting in message failures. Even if you don’t send bulk emails getting SPF and DMARC checks in place is still essential if you want to be sure your message gets to your intended recipients.
Check out our blog for more on the changes that Google & Yahoo are planning and for a free record check. https://tamitesecureit.com/dmarc-check-monitor-and-report/

Email is going to be my main topic this week. The reason being that not only is messaging the hub of most of your business processes, it is also the process that is going to see the most change in the next couple of years, the drivers for the changes are two fold. The first is security and the second will be AI, initially Microsoft Copilot and the other competing products, which are set to revolutionise the way we view our messaging
More mundanely the changes being implimented by major services such as gmail and yahoo (Microsoft) aimed at Improving email security by requiring domains to implement DMARC, SPF and DKIM.

If you have gone through the process of creating DMARC records, you will have become aware that DMARC provides reports in an .XML format that should be monitored to ensure everything is running smoothly.

This year 2023, marks 20 years of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so let’s spread a little awareness.

These days, children are given lessons at school about staying safe on the web, but many of us adults probably weren’t.

When you consider that most office-based workers spend 70-80% of their time on the web, it’s clear that companies should be training their staff and giving them the basics. That’s why Cyber Awareness Month is so important.

Before we talk about any technical layers of security that should be put in place, let us be clear that a lack of awareness can undo any efforts we make with the other security layers.

Confidential documents have been leaked from 14 UK schools in a leak that is concerning on all sorts of levels.
However, it makes interesting reading, and we can all learn lessons.
Especially in the area of how we hold and how long we keep sensitive data.

When a cyber-attack happens, this week on several UK Schools. It's time to learn the lessons and update our Cyber security plan accordingly.

I recently received a call from a customer who was very concerned after being emailed by someone claiming to have accessed their computer.

My client was worried as the credentials (username and password to you and me) highlighted in the email are credentials that they use to access specific Internet sites.
These emails are standard Phishing emails trying to draw you into responding. So should you mark these messages as spam and ignore them?
