Bonfield Ghyll is an off-grid working upland farm, forming part of the National Trustβs Bransdale Estate. Surrounded entirely by the stunning heather moorland of The North York Moors National Park, the farm is accessed via a rough stone
track. With the nearest town (Helmsley) 7 miles away, this really is the place to get away from it all. Guests are welcome to bring up to 2 dogs with them, but we ask these are kept under strict control because of stock and wildlife. The farm is predominantly moorland sheep, with a small herd of Belted Galloway cattle. Guests may be lucky enough to see our sheep dogs working, new born lambs in spring, or sheep being shorn during the summer. As we try to farm in ways that benefit the environment, in spring the farm is a haven for upland breeding birds such as lapwing, curlew and snipe and visitors enjoy watching smaller birds, bats and other wild animals depending on the time of year. The old back kitchen to the side of the main farmhouse has been converted to create an idyllic and romantic getaway. Dating back to 1707, the cottage retains original features including: , it takes you back in time, but with all the comforts of modern living. A generous entrance hall with an upcycled chapel pew provides a great place for easing off muddy boots and has hooks above the radiator for wet coats. The double height living room is a real talking point, with quarry tile floors and old Victorian cooking range (decorative only). A comfy sofa sits in front of the modern log burning stove (all logs, kindling etc provided), whilst the TV with Chromecast and a DVD/ CD/ USB player sit on top of the restored brick wash copper (WIFI included but sometimes intermittent). A quirky dining table made from an upcycled mangle (affectionately known as Mrs Tittyhanger) and original artwork all add to the character. Steep original ladder steps with handrails lead up the sleeping area on the mezzanine, with low beams and double bed with quality mattress (all bedding is included). Downstairs the former Waterhouse accommodates the kitchen and shower room. The breakfast kitchen is full appointed, with an upcycled dresser housing everything you could need, there is also a small fridge freezer, full size gas cooker, microwave and all kitchen equipment (all cleaning/washing up materials are provided as are supplies to make drinks and snacks on arrival). We also provide a travel hairdryer and iron but ask that guests use these sparingly and do not bring electrical equipment other than phone chargers / laptops with them. Through the kitchen is the shower room with flushing toilet, sink and the stone water trough which was once the water supply for the house now forming the shower tray (hand towels, bath sheets and robes are provided.) Outdoors, there is a reserved car parking place in the yard and stone steps lead down through a shared garden area to the cottage, round the corner there is a private decked patio area with garden furniture and views across the field. A homemade wood burning hot tub (no jets or bubbles) provides the perfect place to relax and unwind with spectacular views of dark starry skies on a clear night: swimwear is optional after dark. There is a grill basket for cooking on the chimera style hot tub heater. Fuel for hot tub is included as are marshmallows and a toasting fork. Whether your idea of the perfect walk is wandering down the paddock into the wood to see how our Archimedes Screw generates micro-hydro electricity from our beck, a brisk circuit around the farm with your dogs or packing up a picnic for a longer hike across the moortop taking in spectacular views of Bilsdale or Bransdale there is something for all abilities and maps and guides are provided. The Old Back Kitchen is also situated on the Bransdale Loop cycle route and has bike storage facilities and easy access to many moorland tracks.
