We have had lots of guests commenting on how clear the stars are from our gardens, and they are staggered by how many stars there are π The photo is Arthur's Stone just 5 minutes away.
It's International Dark Skies Week - Come Stargazing in Herefordshire
Looking for a serene escape under the stars? Herefordshire offers some of the UK's darkest skies, perfect for stargazing enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned astronomer or a casual observer, the County provides numerous locations to witness the beauty of the night sky.
Here are some highlights:
π Garway Hill β With its panoramic 360-degree views and remote setting, Garway Hill is a prime spot for spotting constellations, planets, and meteor showers.
π Hergest Ridge β A tranquil ridge near Kington offering vast skies and minimal light pollution - perfect for capturing the Milky Way on a clear night.
π Arthurβs Stone β This ancient Neolithic tomb blends history with astronomy, offering a unique stargazing experience against a dramatic and timeless backdrop.
π Golden Valley β Tucked away in southwest Herefordshire, the Golden Valleyβs secluded landscapes and low light levels make it a stargazing haven.
π Llangrove β Located near Ross-on-Wye, Llangrove is ideal for peaceful, starlit walks and a chance to immerse yourself in the sounds and sights of nocturnal nature.
The Lyrid meteor shower peaked in the early hours of this morning and will be active until April 26, 2025. Observers can expect to see up to 15β20 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, with the radiant point near the constellation Lyra.
Bring layers of clothing, a red-light torch, binoculars or a telescope if you have one, and maybe a flask of something warm. There are free apps that you can download to help identify stars and planets too.
Herefordshire is easy to reach from places like Birmingham, Bristol, or London, but once you're here, it feels like a world away.
The County has a wonderful variety of accommodations, with many tailored for dark-sky enthusiasts, such as cabins and yurts with panoramic views.
